A Brief Overview
In addition to performing the clinical and non-clinical duties of a CRNA, the Chief CRNA plays a pivotal role in the Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine by serving as a key liaison between CRNA staff and departmental leadership. This includes facilitating communication with the Administrative Director, Division Chief, Department Chair, and Vice Chair of Administration. The Chief CRNA is responsible for ensuring the efficient coordination of clinical schedules, credentialing documentation, staffing, and recruitment processes for CRNAs.

What you will do

Leadership & Administration:
  • Directly supervises CRNAs in all administrative aspects and collaborates with physician leadership on their performance evaluation.
  • Responsible for CRNA recruitment, hiring and onboarding.
  • Mentors and trains new CRNAs and students in anesthesia procedures and protocols.
  • Conducts biannual review of learning needs with CRNAs to set individual education/training goals.
  • Act as a primary point of contact to facilitate effective communication between CRNA staff and departmental leadership.
  • Coordinate interdepartmental and intradepartmental activities for Anesthesiology staff CRNAs.
  • Represents the CRNA team in departmental meetings and committees.
  • Fosters a positive and inclusive work environment that promotes teamwork and collaboration.
  • Implements initiatives to enhance CRNA engagement, job satisfaction, and professional development.
  • Addresses employee concerns, provide support, and advocate for the well-being of the CRNA team.
  • Collaborates with the Administrative Director and Division Chief to remain in departmental and hospital guided budget for staffing.
  • Participates in budget planning and resource allocation for anesthesia services.


Compliance:
  • Demonstrates knowledge and application of corporate and department procedures and policies, and any updates to these policies and procedures. Ensure compliance with hospital regulations, accreditation standards, and state/federal laws.
  • Ensures CRNA staff maintain current documentation of licensure and certification.
  • Periodically reviews files to ensure compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Interfaces with Medical Staff Affairs regarding changes in requirements and follows up with staff on missing documentation.


Operations:
  • Facilitates the clinical scheduling for the divisional CRNAs, in collaboration with the divisional administrators.
  • Monitors planned and unplanned absences and fills gaps accordingly.
  • Monitors and approves appropriate requests for PPL for all divisional CRNAs; approves time and attendance according to CHOP policies.
  • Collaborates with Division Chief and Board Runner to flex staffing to meet clinical demand.


Patient Management - Anesthesiology. All performed under the direct supervision of an attending Anesthesiologist:
  • Pre-anesthetic evaluation, determination of appropriateness of preparation and physical status of patient for anesthesia and operation as scheduled, physical exam, appropriate lab and radiological studies as indicated, and discussion of anesthesia management and risks.
  • Conducts general, regional, or local anesthesia and monitored anesthesia care in appropriate locations, including the selection, ordering, and administration of anesthetics, muscle relaxants, and other adjuvant drugs.
  • Monitors and supports vital functions, including but not limited to, management of ventilation and administration of fluids and blood products.
  • Vascular access by percutaneous techniques as required, including arterial cannulation and catheterization of central veins, pulmonary arteries, and internal jugular veins.
  • Orders and administers potent analgesics and sedatives to control pain in the perioperative period.
  • Airway management and cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
  • Conduct of general and regional anesthesia, including the selection and administration of anesthetics, muscle relaxants, and other adjuvant drugs and monitoring and support of vital functions for cardiothoracic catheterization procedures.


For those with privileges in Cardiac Anesthesia:
  • Conducts general and regional anesthesia, including the selection and administration of anesthetics, muscle relaxants, and other adjuvant drugs and monitoring and support of vital functions for:
  • Cardiothoracic procedures requiring cardiopulmonary bypass.
  • Closed cardiac procedures.
  • Catheterization lab procedures in patients with pulmonary hypertension.
  • Institution of ECMO, Ventricular Assist Devices.


Education Qualifications
  • Master's Degree Nursing Required
  • Doctorate Nursing Preferred


Experience Qualifications
  • At least five (5) years experience as a CRNA. Required

Licenses and Certifications
  • Registered Nurse (Pennsylvania) - Pennsylvania State Licensing Board - upon hire - Required and
  • Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) - American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA) - upon hire - Required and
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) - issued through on organization that requires a hands-on instructor lead psychomotor skills verification (ex. American Heart Association or Red Cross). - upon hire - Required and
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) - issued through on organization that requires a hands-on instructor lead psychomotor skills verification (ex. American Heart Association or Red Cross). - upon hire - Required and
