Position Overview:

LCDP seeks a Chief Development Officer (CDO) to guide the fundraising and communications vision, strategy, and activities for a vital nonprofit that serves as a Federally Qualified Health Care (FQHC) in DC and Maryland. We seek a dedicated development professional with a proven track record identifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding individual donors; securing foundation and corporate funding; creating and implementing marketing and communication strategies; expanding brand awareness; and leading an effective and cohesive development and communications team.

Working closely with the CEO, Board of Directors, and senior leadership, the CDO will build a strong culture of philanthropy at the organization, drive brand awareness, and focus on expanding private resource investments in LCDP's mission and work. The CDO will be a member of the leadership team and oversee day-to-day administration of private annual contributions totaling $1,500,000, which we seek to grow to $3M by the end of 2028.

Leading three direct reports, with the potential to expand the team as funds are raised, the incoming CDO will have expertise in directing fundraising and communications operations, including growing an annual fund program, securing individual major gifts and institutional investments, and overseeing communications strategy and activities. The current team includes an interim consultant responsible for annual and mid-level individual giving and a Director of Communications. A Development Manager role to oversee the annual fund and mid-level giving, and a Development Coordinator, who will focus on the database, events, and administrative tasks, are both open positions. The CDO and development team works closely with the Director of Grants and Funded Contracts who manages an $8.6M federal, state and local grants program and, together with two Grants and Funded Contract Specialists, provide grants writing for corporate and foundation opportunities. The CDO may engage external consultants to deepen the team's capacity and meet development goals if needed.

The CDO reports to the CEO and will work in partnership with the Board of Directors. The CDO will lead efforts to expand major gifts, create opportunities for sponsorships and engagement, ensure all messaging is clear and persuasive, and bring strong management skills to the role.

Fundraising Strategy & Operations:
  • Expand LCDP's annual fundraising through measurable financial goals, timelines, and tactics, with a focus on growing individual giving (annual fund, midlevel, major gifts, planned gifts); expanding foundation support, deepening corporate investments, and help ensure continued federal, state and local support in an actively changing funding environment. Create workplan with team and consultant(s) to make sure goals are accomplished.
  • Direct a portfolio of high-net-worth individuals, foundations, and corporate partnerships, and work to cultivate new prospects from each giving channel. Collaborate with the CEO on donor relationships, and devise creative strategies to connect with, engage, solicit and steward donors.
  • Create and execute a growth strategy within current activities to build LCDP's pipeline of new funder prospects. Develop moves management process and oversee prospect screening. Design and implement a recruitment and retention strategy for LCDP's monthly sustainer program Amig@s del Pueblo.
  • In coordination with a strong team, develop impact-driven funding cases, foundation and corporate grant proposals, appeal letters and donor communications that represent key funding priority areas and the vision, mission, and values of LCDP.
  • Lead planning and execution of signature event(s) to meet agreed fundraising outcomes, including effective engagement of volunteers, board members, and strategic stakeholders and ownership of sponsorship solicitation.
  • Work with senior staff members and program leads to identify priority areas for strategic funding investments. Meet regularly with LCDP teams to learn about programmatic priorities, accomplishments, and needs.
  • Report regularly on fundraising progress to the CEO, Board of Directors, and senior leadership staff. Identify key metrics to track, analyze, and share via clear reporting tools.
  • Serve as primary fundraising point of contact for the Board of Directors and engage them in support of annual development goals and activities, engagement opportunities, and leverage board ties to identify potential donors and funders.
  • Establish vision and oversight for 2-3 annual fundraising campaigns each year. Activities may include designing, leveraging, and implementing campaigns and strategies to increase revenue through targeted digital/direct efforts, securing matching challenge funds, drafting appeal content, and working in collaboration with LCDP's communications team to align messaging.

Communications & Marketing:
  • Work with the Director of Communications to lead strategic communications and marketing to amplify LCDP's impact and regularly evaluate the effectiveness of annual activities.
  • Develop an annual communications strategy that leverages the expertise of the senior leadership team with internal and external audiences.
  • Oversee the development of coordinated, appropriate, timely, and effective communications to educate and inform key constituencies, raise the profile of LCDP regionally and nationally, and grow target service volumes.
  • Increase external and internal understanding and awareness of LCDP's programs, services, brand, and image.
  • Oversee expense management for communications to optimize operations, maximize investments, and improve efficiency.
  • Ensure that Director of Communications creates donor centric stewardship and cultivation materials.

Management, Leadership & Supervisory Experience:
  • Set clear fundraising department priorities and annual goals.
  • Oversee the development and communications budget, including creating accurate forecasts. Work with the finance team to reconcile revenue reports and monitor cash flow to inform decision making; assist with the annual audit.
  • Supervise four (4) FTEs and make staffing recommendations for fundraising to meet the evolving needs of the organization and align with external funding trends.
  • Recruit, hire, onboard, and train approved fundraising positions. Oversee external contractors, as needed, to support development.
  • Ensure accurate and timely gift processing, donor acknowledgements, and event planning, working across departments as needed.
  • Address performance issues, implement improvement plans, and manage employee transitions in alignment with LCDP's policies.
  • Identify professional development opportunities, award strong performance, and review/manage performance improvement when appropriate.
  • Plan for future revenue in collaboration with cross-departmental leadership, inclusive of resource and staffing needs to operationalize 10-year strategic plan.

Qualifications:

This role calls for a broad range of skills and expertise. We recognize that no candidate will have every qualification listed, but strong applicants will likely bring many of the following:
  • At least nine years of professional fundraising and communications experience; four years in management or leading teams.
  • Demonstrated track record of setting ambitious development goals and closing six-figure gifts.
  • Experience driving communication strategies in a culturally diverse environment.
  • Sound judgment and maturity, exemplified by consistent professionalism in working with individuals at all levels both internally and externally.
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise and motivate staff and delegate effectively to achieve objectives and deadlines.
  • Fluency with technology, including with prospect research tools and fundraising databases; familiarity with Every Action is a plus. Fluency in Microsoft Suite of Programs, with high competency in Excel.
  • Strong project management skills, including developing processes, standard operating procedures, and timelines to execute multiple projects at one time.
  • Ability to manage sensitive and confidential information with integrity.
  • Willingness to complete some work outside of traditional business hours and travel to off-site venues for meetings/events, primarily in the D.C. metro area.
  • Excellent writing, editing, and verbal communication skills, including group facilitation and training experience;
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education & work experience.

Preferred Skills:
  • Bilingual - Spanish and English.
  • Experience leading a development department at a mid- or large-size non-profit in the D.C. area. Experience fundraising for a healthcare organization a plus.
  • Demonstrated commitment to, and personal or professional experience with, the Latine community in the region.
  • A commitment to social justice and health equity.

Location:

La Clnica del Pueblo has locations in the Columbia Heights and Mount Pleasant neighborhoods of Washington, DC. We also serve the D.C. region with locations in Prince George's County, Maryland. The CDO must be in the Washington region to facilitate on-site work, which includes at least 4 days in our D.C. office and occasional evening/weekend events.

Compensation & Benefits:

The anticipated salary for this role is approximately $160,000, with a maximum of $178,000. Benefits include Health, Dental, and Vision Insurance; Retirement Plan (403B); Life Insurance; Short-Term Disability; Paid Vacation Leave; Paid Sick Time; Paid Holidays; a Transportation Program; and an Education Program. This is an Exempt/Salaried position.
