Wisconsin Center District Job Description - Chief Engineer

Position Overview: Reporting to the Vice President of Facilities, the Chief Engineer manages the engineering team and department. The Chief Engineer manages the operation, maintenance, and repair of heating, air conditioning, refrigeration, ventilation equipment, and fire protection systems and ice hockey ammonia system at the Wisconsin Center District (Baird Center, UW-M Panther Arena and Miller High Life Theatre). The Chief Engineer is responsible for the maintenance and repair of food service equipment, such as portable beer coolers, garbage disposal units, walk-in freezers and coolers, and ice hockey ammonia equipment.

Responsibilities:
  • Installs, inspects, maintains, and repairs cooling towers, condensate, hot water, chilled water, and condenser water pumps
  • Installs, inspects, maintains, and repairs air, water, drain, and gas lines for facility exhibitors
  • Installs, inspects, maintains, and repairs belts, pulleys, and food service equipment
  • Inspects and repairs plumbing fixtures and opens clogged drains; inspects and maintains fire protection systems
  • Calibrates pneumatic and associated HVAC controls on a preventative maintenance and as needed basis
  • Researches and recommends parts/materials for purchase; provides detailed input into the department's annual budget
  • Provides directions and assistance to WCD guests
  • Manages a team of engineers and fosters a work environment that encourages a culture of high performance, focused on improving operations and providing quality customer service
  • Manages and oversees that all work completed by the team is done correctly and efficiently, providing coaching as needed
  • Manages and oversees the team's work schedule to ensure there is always sufficient coverage in the building for events and non-event days
  • Works in conjunction with the Vice President of Facilities to help implement an effective Preventative Maintenance program for all equipment.
  • Operates and maintains the building BAS, fire pumps, jockey pumps and fire suppression system.
  • Performs maintenance and repairs of various HVAC equipment including: air handlers, VAV boxes, fan coils, heat pumps and split systems.
  • Performs light plumbing repairs including but not limited to: toilets, urinals, sinks, faucets and drainage.
  • Maintains, inspects and repairs all kitchen equipment on the 3 WCD properties.
  • Manages all required daily, weekly, monthly, semi-annual, and annual required building inspections, and institute required corrections and/or Preventative Maintenance systems and schedules as needed
  • Reviews and submits payroll for team on bi-weekly basis
  • Works with subcontractors and vendors as required to carry out the various responsibilities of such 3rd party services.
  • Manages work request and preventative maintenance requirements through an on-line work order system including, responding to all service calls and verifying completion
  • Obtains required permits, equipment, tools, and materials for projects
  • Coordinates the operations activities with other building departments and show-related contractors
  • Leads, guides, and/or trains other engineers in applicable procedures and techniques.
  • Manages 90 day and annual performance reviews for team of engineers
  • Other responsibilities and duties, as assigned by management, to ensure the effective utilization of company resources and to ensure customer satisfaction

  • Strong project management and organizational skills in which attention to detail and the ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks/projects on time is essential

  • Ability to read and understand building plans, repair project plans, blueprints, and specifications sufficient to draft, interpret, modify, and follow in order to complete engineering projects

  • Ability to work flexible and irregular hours that may vary due to functions and may include day, evening, weekends, and holidays as event calendar or deadlines dictate
  • Ability to read, write, understand and speak English; perform basic mathematical functions (add, subtract, multiply and divide)
  • Follow oral and written instructions and communicate effectively with others in both oral and written form
  • Ability to implement a training program for the maintenance engineering staff in the areas of HVAC, electrical systems and plumbing systems
  • Ability to effectively interact with customers, field staff, co-workers and vendors

Education & Experience:
  • Required
  • High School diploma, GED, or equivalent work experience required
  • EPA Certification for Refrigerant Recovery
  • Must be at least 21 years of age with a valid driver's license; driving record within MVR policy guidelines
    • Minimum of five (5) years' experience in general engineering
  • Preferred
  • One (1) year certificate from trade or technical school
  • Proficient in the use of the Microsoft Office Suite of Products: Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Access, Outlook
