Chief Engineer Job Descriptions

The Chief Engineer is an exempt position and the ability to work varying days and shifts as desired may be an essential function of this job. The Chief Engineer reports to the General Manager of the assigned plant.

The Chief Engineer will be responsible for creating a solid technical team of plant engineers, maintenance technicians and PM apprentices to repair, maintain and optimize processing machinery from the boiler room to production floor. The successful candidate will collaborate with the GM and operations team to ensure quality standards and overall equipment effectiveness.

Job Responsibilities
Recruit, hire, train and lead all maintenance personnel
Monitor and manage the existing CMMS to maintain an overall 90% PM task completion rate for the plant and 100% for Tier 1 PM tasks.
Daily coach good men to be better in all aspects of their job responsibilities creating a career path for all reports. Build the bench to develop team members for promotion to other US or International plants. Be a mentor to the engineering team.
Maintain all plant machinery keeping KPI's posted on the plant Performance Board to reduce utility consumption, adhere to all safety compliance, R&M expenses, machinery uptime and other metrics.
Maintain parts inventory with approved turnover rates to ensure machinery uptime
Work closing with Regional or Corporate Engineering leadership on Kaizen, 5S and other continuous improvement programs.
Facilitate in optimal utilization of engineering resources to provide consistent high quality and customer retention.
Identification of building and physical plant repair issues and address them
Control of energy cost through effective monitoring of machine performance
Create and manage the Engineering department yearly budget to hit targeted goals.

Supervisory Responsibility and Work Environment

This position manages approximately 12-15 employees in the department and is responsible for the performance management and hiring of the employees within that department.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be exposed to fumes or airborne particles, high voltage and moving mechanical parts. The noise level in the work environment within certain departments can be loud. The processing plant temperature during summer months can be high.

Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

The employee is required to sit; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch and crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

Required Education and Experience

High school diploma.
Two years of formal technical training in the principles of electricity and electrical design
Two years of journeyman's experience in the installation, repair and maintenance of electrical systems, equipment and fixtures from blueprints, schematics and sketches.
College degree in Electrical, Mechanical or Industrial Engineering
A minimum of 8-10 years of technical experience in all disciplines is required including CMMS, inventory control and OEE tracking (overall equipment effectiveness).
