Munising Memorial Hospital is an Independent, 11 bed critical access hospital and rural health clinic in Munising, Michigan. Rebuilt and newly opened in 2008, Munising Memorial Hospital provides emergency department, urgent care, primary care / rural health clinic, specialty care, inpatient / observation / swing bed, endoscopy, laboratory, radiology, and rehabilitative services to the people who live in and around Alger County, Michigan.

The CEO will provide leadership and assume responsibility and accountability for the overall strategic and operational planning of MMH in conjunction with, and within the authority of, the overall strategic direction of the governing board. The CEO will perform duties and responsibilities personally or through subordinate supervisors. The CEO will:
  • Manage and direct the organization towards its primary objectives, plans and policies.
  • Develop and implement hospital policies and procedures.
  • Dispense advice, guidance, direction and authorization to carry out major plans and procedures, consistent with established policies.
  • Oversee the adequacy and soundness of the organization's financial structure.
  • Review operating results of the organization and undertake steps to ensure that appropriate measures are implemented to correct unsatisfactory results.
  • Possess and maintain an understanding of the political process at the local, state and national level, in order to ensure regulatory and other compliance with agencies that govern health care delivery and the rules of accrediting bodies.
  • Maintain professional affiliations and enhance professional growth and development to keep abreast of the latest trends in hospital administration.


Essential functions include but are not limited to:

Community Health and Relations -
  • Develop and expand programs and services for the promotion of preventative medicine and community health.
  • Establish a culture of collaboration and integration, which enhances the provision of excellent patient care and improved patient satisfaction.
  • Provide a safe patient care environment that supports innovation and creativity.
  • Maximize operational efficiencies to provide the highest quality, safest and most appropriate patient care.
  • Represent the organization at community meetings and promote programs through various news media.
  • Enhance the organizations visibility in the community by contributing through personal and delegated activities and commitment of resources.
  • Become/maintain a visible entity in local discussions regarding community health care needs.
  • Uphold social, ethical and organizational norms in all MMH related activities.

Personnel Relations and Duties -
  • Provide communication to MMH personnel regarding the mission of MMH and recognition of employee contributions to the mission.
  • Oversee strong workforce development through recruitment and retention, employee satisfaction and engagement. Maximize growth potential of employees and strong succession planning, embracing diversity as a strategic advantage.
  • Establish an effective means to communicate throughout the organization. Uses appropriate interpersonal styles and methods to guide individuals or groups to accomplish tasks.
  • Model enthusiasm, competence and commitment to quality, which is desired from all MMH employees.
  • Assure the hiring/maintaining of competent staff.
  • Supervise the functions of all department directors and make timely decisions to resolve issues of incompetent supervision.
  • Provide a safe employee environment that supports innovation and creativity.

Financial Accountability -
  • Administer fiscal operations, which meet or exceed the budget forecast.
  • Achieve and maintain strong financial health.
  • Ensure timely, relevant and accurate financial information.

Medical Staff -
  • Establish and coordinate efforts of the Medical Staff, Board and Administration for effective physician recruitment efforts and retention of medical personnel.
  • Work with medical staff and all those concerned with rendering professional services to the end that the best possible care is given to all patients.
  • Maintain positive professional relationships with the medical staff.
  • Supervise the functions of the medical staff, which are considered a department for the purpose of administrative control, to ensure competency and solve issues of incompetence without delay.

Board Relations -
  • Develop and submit strategic plans for the organization to the governing board and recommend changes when necessary. Participate in charting the course the hospital is to take in response to the developing healthcare needs of the community.
  • Keep the Board informed of activities, progress and problems at MMH and follows up on issues brought by the Board.
  • Support the Board's purpose, goals and functions and make sound recommendations to the Board. Discuss important issues prior to asking for action.
  • Maintain a courteous attitude and be receptive to board members' ideas and concerns.
  • Provide all new governing board members with orientation to the organization and its mission, by-laws, policies, etc. and the duties and responsibilities of members of the Board.

Building and Grounds -
  • Negotiate for improvement of and additions to hospital building and equipment. Oversee that all physical properties of the hospital are kept in a good state of repair and operating condition.


Requirements

Professional Requirements:

The CEO should have extensive knowledge of current health care administrative principles and practices, including:
  • Modern patient care
  • Facilities
  • Hospital finance and accounting principles
  • Overall understanding of hospital operations - personnel, maintenance, lab, x-ray, purchasing, office procedures and records
  • For profit background/experience
  • Vision for the future and keep abreast of healthcare trends
  • Prevention management skills
  • Oversight of building projects
  • Physician recruiting and personnel interviewing
  • Knowledge in Board training, long range planning, employee education
  • Marketing
  • Legal issues for employees, physicians, claims/risk management and D&O liability
  • Analyze operational data and employ approved management techniques to obtain maximum effectiveness and efficiency.
  • Direct, instruct and advise managerial staff in approved methods, procedures and practices employed in effective healthcare administration.
  • Receive and effectively react to day-to-day difficulties presented by managerial staff.
  • Interpret established policies into operating procedures, which then implement hospital programs.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with the staff.
  • Evaluate concerns of the public and translate those concerns into effective operations/procedures.

Education/Experience Requirements:
  • Bachelor's Degree in a related field.
  • 7+ years' experience in a hospital setting in a supervisory role.

Physical Requirements:
  • Work involves frequent walking, speaking, hearing, handling paperwork, bending, carrying, and lifting of up to 10 lbs.
  • Work environment is indoors.
  • Moderately stressful at times.
  • Use of office machines such as copiers, faxes, typewriters, calculators and personal computers.
