Primary Purpose:

Oversee, direct and manage all activities of the Alief ISD Police Department. Coordinate daily operations of department to provide safe environment for students and staff. Ensure enforcement of all federal, state, and local laws and ordinances.
Qualifications:

Education/Certification:
  • College degree
  • Master peace officer certification and crime prevention certification issued by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement


Special Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
  • Knowledge of criminal investigations, police report writing, and criminal law
  • Ability to work effectively with students, staff, parents, administrators and others from various socio-economic levels, cultures and ethnic backgrounds
  • Ability to write and enter data into the police department computer
  • Ability to manage budget and personnel
  • Training and ability to subdue offenders, including use of firearms and handcuffs
  • Bondable as required by Texas Education Code 37.081(h)
  • Strong public relations, organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills


Experience:
  • Fifteen (15) or more consecutive years as a full time paid peace officer
  • Five (5) years of command or supervisory experience in law enforcement equivalent of Lieutenant, Captain or above; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Department Management
  • Direct the daily operations of the district police department to ensure effective law enforcement using strategic planning in the use of department resources.
  • Oversee all District police functions including patrol, crime prevention, investigations, traffic enforcement, school services, child safety programs, dispatch and records.
  • Coordinate with district administrators in obtaining additional police support for special events or situations.
  • Develop and direct the implementation of goals, objectives, policies, procedures and work standards.
  • Coordinate enforcement activities with other department directors and campus principals and work cooperatively to develop and implement preventative security programs, gang management plans, and other safety programs.
  • Investigate and make recommendations on all complaints and accusations made against district police officers or staff.
Law Enforcement
  • Ensure enforcement of all laws and ordinances within the scope of board policy and the jurisdiction of district.
  • Perform all duties of licensed peace officers.
  • Oversee investigation of criminal activities that occur within the district's jurisdiction, offenses against the district, and support other agencies conducting investigations.
  • Serve as district liaison to state and local law enforcement agencies and juvenile authorities and represent the district on assigned committees and task forces.
Safety
  • Develop department safety procedures including procedures for safe handling and use of firearms.
  • Create, establish, and distribute guidelines for police department response to emergency and crisis events.
Budget
  • Prepare and administer department budget based on documented needs and ensure that operations are cost-effective and funds are managed wisely.
  • Establish sound security measures for the transfer of funds.
Personnel Management
  • Select, train, supervise, and evaluate staff and make sound recommendations relative to assignment, retention, discipline, and dismissal.
  • Evaluate job performance of employees to ensure effectiveness.
  • Prepare, review, and revise police department job descriptions.
Administration
  • Maintain property room for storage of weapons and contraband confiscated on district property.
  • Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other documents required.
Professional Development
  • Attend such conventions and conferences as necessary to keep abreast of latest policing practices and strategies.
Other
  • Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
  • Maintain an appropriate level of technology competence to meet the current and future needs of Alief.
  • Implement alternative methods of instruction as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Supervisory Responsibilities

Supervise, evaluate, and recommend hiring and termination of police department employees.

Evaluation

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on evaluation of Professional Supervisor Personnel.

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

Tools/Equipment Used: District vehicle, firearm, handcuffs, alarm system, security equipment, two-way radio, alarm system and other security equipment, fire extinguisher, and standard office equipment including computer and peripherals

Posture: Prolonged sitting and standing

Motion:Strenuous walking and climbing; frequent keyboarding and use of mouse; frequent driving

Lifting: Moderate lifting and carrying (up to 25 pounds); May require occasional heavy lifting and carrying (25-50 pounds)

Environment: Work inside and outside (moderate exposure to sun, heat, cold, and inclement weather). Frequent districtwide travel

Other: Specific hearing and visual requirements. May be subject to adverse and hazardous working conditions, including violent and armed confrontations. Ability to control sudden violent or extreme physical acts of others and exhibit rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously.

Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress; prolonged hours; on call 24 hours a day.

2024-2025 Salary Schedule

2025-2026 Salary Schedule is pending school board approval

Salary is based on working 235 days. Working less days is less salary.
