Duties and Responsibilities

We are actively recruiting Chief Residents for the 2026-2027 academic year for the Loyola Medicine-MacNeal Hospital Internal Medicine and Transitional Year Residency Program in Berwyn, Illinois. Each year, we select two Chief Residents to join our leadership team and work with 42 Internal Medicine (IM) and 14 Transitional Year (TY) residents.

This one-year position offers outstanding opportunities for recent residency graduates to further develop their teaching and leadership skills while gaining clinical experience as an attending physician. Many of our former Chief Residents have gone on to pursue careers in academic medicine, competitive fellowships, and hospital medicine.

About MacNeal Hospital & the Chief Resident Role

MacNeal Hospital is a 374-bed institution with three residency programs: Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, and Transitional Year. The Chief Resident position includes a balance of educational, administrative, and clinical responsibilities, including:

Teaching & Education:
  • Leading resident and medical student education through Chief-led conferences.
  • Conducting hospital-wide teaching conferences and CME-accredited noontime lectures for attending physicians.
  • Managing multi-module simulation workshops for procedures and high-fidelity simulations.


Leadership & Administration:
  • Representing the residency programs on key hospital and program committees.
  • Leading a Quality Improvement (QI) project with residents.
  • Gaining administrative experience, including scheduling and program management.


Clinical Responsibilities & Moonlighting:
  • Supervising residents as an attending in the continuity clinic and inpatient medicine.
  • Option to moonlight externally or within the MacNeal hospitalist team (covering night shifts remotely from home on weekends) based on work authorization status.
  • MacNeal moonlighting is remote/home call for night shifts on weekends.


By the end of the academic year, Chief Residents develop a strong foundation in medical education, hospital leadership, and administrative skills, preparing them for diverse career paths in hospital medicine, academic medicine, or private practice.

Application Criteria

An ideal candidate should have the following:

Completion of an Internal Medicine Residency Program & Board eligibility
  • MD or DO degree
  • Strong interest in medical education, teaching, and curricular development
  • Commitment to leadership and mentorship
  • J-1 visa holders are eligible to apply
  • Ability to attend the APDIM or ACGME Chief Resident Conference (Spring 2026)
  • We reimburse the fee for the ABIM boards.


Location & Moonlighting Opportunities

MacNeal Hospital is in Berwyn, just 20 minutes west of downtown Chicago. Moonlighting opportunities are available both within MacNeal and externally, depending on work authorization eligibility.
