Toronto, Ontario, Canada (Hybrid)
We are looking for a Chief Signaling Architect to join our team in Toronto.
The successful candidate will provide expert level technical knowledge and leadership to identify, evaluate and guide communication-based train control signaling in Engineering. They will also provide final approval of complex signaling solutions for all technical proposals and performs signaling design, analysis, modelling, and simulation to specify communication-based train control systems. You will develop and define signaling design features to meet customer requirements and analyze and evaluate customer requirements to verify compliance with our product signaling technical requirements. Develop and define Database requirements to fulfill specific customer requirements on the project. To communicate and gain acceptance of the design with the customer and internal stakeholders.
Experience in leading large technical teams on complex solutions is a must. The incumbent is accountable for performing the design work independently, within cost and schedule limits, as defined in approved work packages. Responsible for leading a team to perform signaling design activities to deliver a high quality and safe guideway design, on time, at the lowest cost while meeting customer requirements. The incumbent will also adapt signaling design processes to meet the needs of the project deployment and industry standards and ensure this process is followed by the team.
Able to understand complex technical topics in short periods of time and determine strategies to analyze and solve problems. This includes the ability to lead a team to understand and follow the strategy.

Key Requirements:
- Ability to perform different roles as a key technical expert in the company. This would include:
- Mentor: Leading through example on good practices for design and following process
- Technical Consultant: Can guide resources/teams to solve technical problems
- Technical Leader: Ability to lead technical teams to solve critical issues
- Technical Manager: Can provide technical input to a project strategy to ensure success
- Also has the ability and experience of performing technical work, this includes the following:
- Signaling Principles
- Data Requirements
- Block Design
- Interlocking Control tables
- Safe braking model
- Performance analysis and Headway simulations
- Application database design
- Prepares Operational Concept Document(s)
- Prepares and supports bids and proposals, including customer requirements compliance assessment, gap analysis, architecture design, simulation, trade-off of key features, estimation, etc.
- Presents technical design and reports to customers and/or other engineering/management groups in clear, complete, concise, and non-ambiguous terms
- Defines or proposes updates of processes and standards covering the work and its products based on the knowledge of systems engineering and/or his technical specialty
- Operational design limits are evaluated and defined; This includes headway and travel time analysis
- Deliver the project guideway application data, signal plan, crossover coordinates, track maps and guideway database to software groups. Ensure the guideway design is implemented in accordance with applicable standards and signaling principles
- Ability to develop solutions that include a balance of cost/benefit
- Ensures and encourages the signaling team to follow the development process
- Strategy of development not only accounts for signaling development work but considers the activities of other teams to ensure the end-to-end solution can be developed in an efficient manner
- Has ability to identify development risks and can create/implement a plan to mitigate these risks
- Promotes a safety culture where product safety is paramount
- Ensures that safety is built into the design by early identification and resolution of safety related defects
- Ability to communicate complex technical issues to non-technical stakeholders
- Ability to convince stakeholders about strategies to resolve issues and sell our product solution
- Leads technical discussions, presents technical solutions and regular status reports to internal and external stakeholders
- Mentor other signaling engineers by coaching them on how and what to prepare, monitoring their progress. Providing technical guidance and directing them on priorities
- Works closely with other Work Package Managers and the project team to ensure the signaling team has the inputs needed to perform the design and ensures the signaling team is providing the necessary outputs/support to other disciplines
- Identifies and implements process improvement initiatives
- Engages other leaders in the organization to ensure the strategy for design on the project/product is consistent with other initiatives in the organization and is capitalizing on other project/product designs
Required Skills and Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in engineering (Systems, Electrical, Computer), Computer Science, or a closely related field
- 12 years' experience in development of software-based System applications
- Knowledge of modern engineering practices, methods, and tools
- Knowledge of systems/signaling development life cycle
- Senior level expertise in URS (Urban Rail Signaling) Systems-Minimum 7 years on/or similar system complexity
- Minimum of 8 year's experience in leading a group of technical resources
- Strong planning and organizational skills
- Excellent technical writing, communication, and presentation skills
Preferred Skills and Experience:
- Experience in using DOORS, Polarion, Melody advance, or other system design and requirement management tools
- Strong application (automated train control systems) domain knowledge & knowledge of systems engineering principles and practices
- Experience in developing/reviewing test scenarios and/or procedures from requirements
- Knowledge of Rail Signaling
- Knowledge of conventional signaling include block design and control tables
- Knowledge of Communication Based Train Control
- Has experience working with tools to assist in the generation of a guideway database
- Work Package Management
