We are seeking a senior level generalized structural engineer to supplement our staff in Boston, MA for work across the country from Maine to California including Puerto Rico and Hawaii. As a specialty group within Vanderweil, our work compliments the Power Group and the Transmission and Distribution groups and supports other vertical markets inside the company for special assignments.
As a specialty group, we are looking for an individual who seeks a challenge, has a broad focus with structural engineering and is keen to learn new codes and methods. Our work product includes building design, equipment foundation design, industrial structure design, electrical substation equipment support design, design of high temperature ductwork, seismic design and design for flood events.

The compensation that we expect to pay for this position is commensurate with experience, education, licensure and location, but will generally range between $90,000 and $140,000.

Essential functions and responsibilities include the following:
- Apply industry codes and standards in the engineering and design of a wide variety of structure types assuring that tasks are complete, accurate and in accordance with good engineering practice.
- Structure and foundation design will include analysis and design of new or expansion of facilities, buildings or structures as well as the evaluation of existing facilities. The candidate should be familiar with using commercially available software such as L-Pile, RISA 3-D, STAAD Pro, RAM Structural System, and CSI SAFE.
- Develop concrete and steel construction documents (specifications and drawings) and review structural calculations to confirm they are in conformance with specifications.
- Prepare reports, memoranda, narratives and presentations of findings using Microsoft Office.
- Work closely with other disciplines on multi-discipline projects and provide additional support to clients and stakeholders
- Review delegated designs by others and verify that specs are followed
- Resolve design or construction difficulties that may include performing field investigation or inspection.
- Provide leadership, guidance and instruction to less experienced staff members, engineering technicians and drafters. Regularly meet and correspond with clients or outside personnel
- Develop, nurture, and maintain trusted relationships with senior level engineers, managers, and executives with current and prospective clients.
- Confidently present technical solutions to key customers. Provide responses in real time to technical concerns and answer questions in a knowledgeable articulate manner.
- Direct and/or participate in client meetings/job site visits to collect or deliver design and engineering data.
Knowledge
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering (Master's preferred)
- Candidate must have the ability to create and modify technical drawings and specifications
- Minimum of 7 years of professional experience with increasing levels of responsibility in the structural analysis and design of structures.
- Licensed professional engineer preferred. Structural PE a strong plus
- A thorough understanding of the practical application of structural engineering including applying principles, techniques, and procedures to a project design.
- Knowledge of structural design techniques, tools, and principles involved in the production of technical plans, drawings, and models
- Proficiency with modeling structural systems using computational software design tools such as RISA, STAAD.pro, LPile, MFAD, RAM Structural System, Tekla, MathCAD, REVIT, Navisworks, Bluebeam and AutoCAD.
- Proficiency with design codes and standards such as IBC, ASCE 7, ASCE 24, ASCE 113, AISC 341 and 360, ACI 318, and IEEE 693.
- Strong knowledge of seismic design principles
- Knowledge of a wide variety of structure types and experience with renovations and new construction
- Familiar with QA/QC procedures and understands basic business practices and laws related to engineering
