Scituate School Department Elementary Principal Job Description The successful candidate will possess the following qualities: A visionary leader who is accessible and successfully communicates with and engages staff, students, parents and the community in the continuous improvement of the school. A compassionate educator who is focused on the academic, social and emotional needs, of all students embodying highest levels of personal ethics, and integrity, with strong inter-personal skills who effectively uses a collaborative approach to building leadership. Specific job responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following: Maintains an effective and positive learning climate in the school. Programs classes with established guides to meet student needs. Assists in the development, revisions and evaluation of the curriculum. Establishes guides for proper student conduct and maintaining student discipline. Supervises the school's teaching process. Plans, organizes and directs implementation of all school activities. Initiates, designs, and implements programs to meet specific needs of the school. Maintains favorable relationships with local community groups and individuals to foster understanding and solicit support for overall school objectives and programs; to interpret school committee policies and administrative directives; and to discuss and resolve individual student problems. Orients newly assigned staff members and assists in their development. Coordinates or supervises such support services as maintenance, security, food services, recreational programs, financial and accounting functions, library activities, etc. Implements and supervises the school's special education programs. Assumes responsibility for the implementation and observance of all school committee policies and regulations by the school's staff and students. Evaluates and counsels all staff members regarding their individual and group performance. Prepares or supervises the preparation of reports, records lists and all other paper work required or appropriate to the school's administration. Participates in principals' meetings, negotiations meetings, and such other meetings as are required or appropriate. Prepares and submits the school's budgetary requests and monitors expenditures of funds. Assists in the recruiting, screening, hiring, training, assigning and evaluation of the school's professional staff. Delegates authority to responsible personnel to assume responsibility for the school in the absence of the principal. Plans and supervises fire drills. Works with various members of the central administrative staff on school problems with districtwide implications. Conducts staff meetings to keep members informed of policy changes, new programs, etc. Keeps the superintendent informed of the school's activities and problems. Keeps abreast of changes and developments in the profession by attending professional meetings, reading professional journals and other publications, and discussing problems of mutual interest with others in the field. Assumes other such responsibilities as may be assigned by the Superintendent of Schools, or School Committee.
