Role Purpose

The Clinical Documentation Improvement Manager oversees the clinical documentation improvement (CDI) program, identifying and focusing on areas of improvement through analysis and interpretation of operational, financial, compliance & quality rating reports. This position manages various operational matters, to include the appropriate scheduling and coverage of reviews, query development and auditing, educating providers, monitoring the program, and refining processes to clarify record documentation. The CDI Manager serves as a resource to provider and administration regarding issues related to the appropriateness of inpatient DRG assignment. Additionally, this position works collaboratively with the CDI team to facilitate documentation within the medical record that supports patient's severity of illness and risk of mortality utilizing strong communication skills with providers, case manager, utilization reviewer, nurse or other healthcare professionals, utilizing appropriate querying tools to capture needed documentation.

Responsibilities
  • Hire, train, assign work, manage & evaluate performance, conduct professional development plans; ensure that the productivity and actions of that group meet/support the overall operational goals of the department as established by department leadership
  • Develops and adheres to departmental staffing, revenue and/or expense budgets. Responds to changes in the business which may affect the ability to achieve the budget goals.
  • Assures policies and procedures support best practices for CDI program and clinical documentation staff; ensures all compliance and regulatory standards are met.
  • Manages provider engagement; collaborates with the CMO office, physician leaders/liaisons and other resources to clarify and/or otherwise improve documentation in order to accurately support diagnosis and quality indicators for care rendered to patients.
  • Develops and implements clinical documentation program to improve the accuracy of the medical record and the quality of patient care reported; coordinates the development of multi-disciplinary teams in setting clinical documentation standards; provides guidance to Case Management, physicians, and hospital staff regarding documentation for correct coding and compliance necessary for increased Case Management Index (CMI), decreased Length of Stay (LOS), and optimal resource utilization.
  • Develops department and organization projects related to documentation improvement; collaborates with enterprise CDI for standards in content, process, and technologies.
