The Arlington County Sheriff's Office is seeking a Clinical Nurse Practitioner to be responsible for delivering comprehensive medical care to individuals in custody of the Arlington County Detention Facility (ACDF), addressing a wide range of health needs including chronic illnesses, acute conditions, and mental health concerns, within a secure correctional environment. The Nurse Practitioner will work closely with interdisciplinary teams, follow established security protocols, and advocate for patient care while navigating the unique challenges of a correctional healthcare setting. This position will report to the Chief Medical Director and will provide patient care according to the rules and regulations set by federal, and local laws and regulations per DOC, ACA, NCCHC and PREA standards.

Responsibilities

Specific duties include:
  • Working collaboratively with the Chief Medical Director and consulting physician in planning, evaluating, and revising program plans;
  • Assisting in determining conditions, resources, and policies essential to delivering health care services;
  • Providing ongoing care for inmates with chronic conditions like diabetes, hypertension, and mental health disorders;
  • Managing daily operation of the clinic and conducting daily sick calls, which may also include securing health and developmental history from the patient, recording findings, and making critical evaluations including discriminating between normal and abnormal findings to recognize early stages of serious physical, emotional, or mental problems;
  • Prescribing medications and treatment for illnesses, calling attention to any synergistic, antagonistic, and cumulative effects of the medications prescribed before dispensing;
  • Providing a wide range of emergency services, in the absence of the physician, including primary care for trauma and life-saving procedures, and performing minor surgical procedures such as incision and drainage; suturing of lacerations; removal of cysts; and removal/repair of ingrown toenails;
  • Monitoring and providing daily care for patients housed in the Detention Facility's infirmary;
  • Assisting with the diagnosis and treatment of patients suffering from substance abuse disorder including alcohol and opiate dependence and withdrawal;
  • Evaluating the total healthcare needs of patients and developing plans to meet those needs and providing training of good health practices to patients;
  • Maintaining and keeping track of pertinent clinical information in medical records and ensuring data is accurate, current, and legible; and
  • Performing other job-related duties as assigned.


The ideal candidate will:
  • Be skilled in conducting patient histories, physical exams, and ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests;
  • Have the ability to assess and analyze medical records and test results to inform treatment decisions;
  • Possess strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to effectively engage with patients, healthcare professionals, and the general public;
  • Demonstrate professionalism, compassion, critical thinking, self-motivation, and a strong ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team; and
  • Be technologically proficient, with experience using Electronic Medical Record (EMR) systems to ensure accurate and timely documentation.


Qualifications

Minimum:
  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing plus completion of the requirements for graduation from a college or university program accredited by the American Nurse's Association, the National League for Nursing or the Joint Virginia Boards of Nursing and Medicine as an approved nurse practitioner education program.

Licenses/Certifications
  • Must be certified or eligible for certification as a Nurse Practitioner in Virginia. The Board of Nursing and the Board of Medicine may issue certification by endorsement to an applicant who has been certified as a Nurse Practitioner by another state, the District of Columbia, or a United States possession or territory;
  • Active DEA registration in good standing; and
  • Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS).


Desirable: Preference may be given to candidates with experience in one or more of the following:
  • Working with a diverse population, including individuals with mental health issues, addiction, and/or disabilities;
  • Working in a correctional medical setting; and
  • Some experience working as a certified Nurse Practitioner.


Special Requirements

Background Check: A pre-employment background investigation will be conducted (which includes a polygraph examination and drug screen). It will also include checks of the following: criminal record, driving record, education, professional licensure, and credit history. The background investigation is conducted by the Sheriff's Office.

Additional Information

Work Hours: Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Occasional weekend or irregular hours may be required. On-call duties may be assigned as necessary.

The official title of this position is Nurse Practitioner.

This is a civilian (non-sworn) position that is not in the Arlington County competitive service. Duties of this position include working around inmates in the Arlington County Detention Facility.
