Job Description

Schedule: Full-time, Monday-Friday, Days

The Clinical Specialist Pharmacist is an expert pharmacist practitioner who relies on skills of comprehensive knowledge and experience who maintains practice by ongoing literature review and self-evaluation; responsible for providing various clinical services including but not limited to the following: taking part in continuing education programs for the medical, nursing and pharmacy staff; advising physicians on drug usage and dose control, as well as being competent to optimize drug therapy/treatment plans; assists the Pharmacy Leadership team in everyday duties; independent evaluations and recommendations for appropriate therapeutic decisions to and in collaboration with other health care providers; and mentorship of other pharmacists and pharmacy students. The Clinical Specialist Pharmacist for Medication Safety and Opioid Stewardship will participate in multi-disciplinary work across local and system committees. They will also be responsible for review and reporting of safety events, as well as cross-functional performance improvement work and education.

Key Responsibilities include the following:
  • Provides pharmaceutical care to patients including the promotion of optimal drug therapy and safe use of medications. Assesses patient-specific data to evaluate medication needs, verifies medication orders, and oversees the preparation, dispensing, distribution and monitoring of all medications.
  • Collaborates and consults with and provides education to pharmacy and medical staff, nurses, allied health professionals, patients and caregivers. Acts as a preceptor for students as directed.
  • Manages care, quality, and costs by engaging in the systematic and continuous process of evaluating and improving the utilization of medications in a patient population in order to enhance the quality, safety, efficiency and cost-effectiveness of the medication use process.
  • Supports interdisciplinary rounds, prepares materials, and participates in facility committees, and or implements strategic initiatives.
  • Takes a leadership role in continuous quality improvement efforts and represents the department as an interdisciplinary interface in the assigned specialty areas.
  • Participates in the development of drug and disease state-based clinical practice guidelines that influence clinical practice. Assures compliance of prescribers with clinical practice guidelines and other medication policies.


Qualifications

Experience:

6 years' experience or PGY2 specialty residency OR
3 years' experience plus PGY1 OR
3 years' experience plus specialty certification

Licensure:

Maryland pharmacist licensure required

Board Certification strongly preferred

Pay Range: $62.84-$69.71
