Position Type: Contract

Reports to: Project Manager
Key Project Requirements:
Proven experience with mechanical commissioning and startup of thermal process systems, burners, or material handling equipment.
Ability to operate effectively in low-documentation or "black box" environments, capturing system behavior during startup.
Skilled in developing or supporting operating procedures, startup plans, and turnover documentation.
Experience with recycled materials processing, asphalt plants, or similar thermal/material blending facilities is highly preferred.
Job Summary:
PIC Group has a unique opportunity for a Commissioning/Startup Manager to support the startup of a first-of-a-kind recycled asphalt plant in Columbus, OH. The plant uses proprietary "black box" technology involving screw conveyors and direct-fired gas burners to process ground asphalt with rubber pellets, oil, and cement. This role involves working in tandem with the OEM to observe system commissioning, document system operations, and provide follow-up support with startup procedures and site handover.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Attend initial site commissioning during OEM-led startup; observe and document system performance and interdependencies.
Coordinate closely and communicate effectively with the OEM, EPC contractor, and client site operations teams.
Identify and communicate system behaviors, integration challenges, or procedural gaps.
Assist with (or lead) the development of operating procedures, startup checklists, and system documentation based on real-time observations.
Conduct system walkdowns and support punch list development during startup.
Evaluate system readiness and contribute to safe, efficient turnover plans.
Job Requirements:
Experience in commissioning and startup of thermal process systems, burner assemblies, or material handling equipment.
Field-proven ability to operate effectively in low-documentation environments.
Strong communication and documentation skills; able to bridge gaps between OEMs, engineering, and operations.
Proficient in reading P&IDs, control logic (when available), and mechanical flow diagrams.
Previous experience with asphalt, cement, rubber, or recycled materials processing is preferred.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to walk, reach, climb, stoop, and lift (up to 75 pounds) in various work environments.
Education / Experience:
10+ years of experience in commissioning, startup, or plant operations roles within industrial, power, or process facilities.
Prior experience supporting or leading thermal system or mechanical process commissioning.
OSHA 10 or 30 certification strongly preferred.
