JOB Objective
Under the general guidance of the Director, Community & Public Relations, this position plays a key role in leading the development of effective outreach and engagement strategies for the credit union in local underserved communities, with a special emphasis on the San Diego Promise Zone.
DIMENSIONS
- Identifies individuals, organizations, businesses, schools and other potential partners in underserved communities with a focus on the San Diego Promise Zone, cultivating and maintaining trusted, mutually-beneficial partnerships to provide Cal Coast support to help improve lives in the area and reflect our commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.
- Communicates and demonstrates the credit unions brand, values and service in the community, especially the underserved areas. Develops new opportunities that achieve and support credit union goals through new and stronger relationships with key stakeholders, including the City of San Diego, Promise Zone Steering Committee and the community organization representatives in the Promise Zone working groups which serve over 80,000 residents in the 6.4 mile area.
- Serves as the key liaison and works closely with the City of San Diegos Promise Zone Manager and Economic Development Department.
- Helps to advance financial inclusion by providing financial wellness resources, especially for underserved individuals and communities. Coordinates and supports up to 100 financial webinars and workshops for the general public, businesses, schools, colleges and other organizations within the credit unions service area, with special emphasis on the Promise Zone.
- Creates and/or further develops trusted partnerships and key relationships to serve Latino, Black and other diverse youth, community groups and organizations.
- Supports member service and sales for 26 branches and call center and the credit unions 200,000 members.
- Influences the perceived value and quality of $3.5 billion brand (organization).
- Interacts with executive leadership and may serve on strategic internal teams. Works closely with other credit union departments and branch management in helping to engage, serve and build membership growth in their communities.
Supervisory responsibilities
The position reports directly to the Director, Community & Public Relations. There are no direct reports to this position.
NATURE & SCOPE
- Responsible for the development and management of the credit unions strategic programs to serve and improve the lives of local underserved communities and advance financial inclusion and an unwavering commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.
- Plays a key role in the creation and implementation of the credit unions ongoing values based brand strategic initiative of serving the underserved as well as future strategic initiatives, community relations and business development plans, and the development and monitoring of specific annual budget plans.
- Leads internal task force to research and determine the needs and perceptions of the target underserved population and develop strategic plans to effectively serve and support their needs.
- Independently identifies and pursues community partnerships and opportunities, resulting in new partnerships in the Promise Zone and underserved communities and helping the credit union achieve strategic goals while increasing brand awareness and membership. Builds and maintains valuable ties with community members and a continuing positive image of the organization.
- Fosters and deepens relationships with executive-level contacts within the educational and business communities, as well as other key community influencers and stakeholders, by recommending, developing and implementing programs, events, and initiatives that leverage partnerships and create mutually-beneficial impacts.
- Serves as the key liaison and works closely with the City of San Diegos Promise Zone Manager and Economic Development Department. Participates in various Promise Zone committees and related task forces. Serves on boards of directors, committees, task forces and other leadership roles as approved, and internal committees and Employee Resource Groups.
- Cultivates, plans, conducts and evaluates outreach efforts, campaigns and promotions at colleges, school district offices, businesses, educational groups and community organizations. Coordinates and negotiates sponsorship opportunities and event participation in underserved communities.
- Collaborates with other departments such as Financial Fitness, Business Development and Human Resources/DEI to develop and deliver presentations on a variety of topics to key stakeholders and underserved target audiences. Develops and conducts financial literacy programs at schools, businesses and civic organizations, especially in the Promise Zone and underserved areas.
- Effectively communicates plans, projects and developments to internal and external stakeholders. Provides guidance internally on communication that will resonate with the key target audiences. Supports social media efforts and encourages volunteer efforts in underserved communities.
- Coordinates and collaborates with internal PR and Marketing teams to develop content to communicate and promote our programs and service in the underserved community both internally and externally.
- Develops metrics to measure and evaluate the credit unions strategic efforts in the Promise Zone and report results, making recommendations to continually enhance our effectiveness at making a marked difference in the lives of the residents and organizations.
- Participates in planning and execution of special events, including major event sponsorships and branch grand openings. Assists with and supports the development of the credit unions Foundation and its events and activities.
- Provides ongoing ideas and recommendations to help increase the credit unions brand awareness, membership, employee volunteerism, product volumes and to enhance our member experience.
- Researches and creates new community outreach and business development opportunities, develops proposals, implements approved programs and evaluates their success. Provides monthly reports regarding efforts and results.
- Researches, analyzes and resolves complaints and problems received from key contacts and related organizations which affect member service and/or the credit unions image.
- Represents the credit union at Chamber of Commerce meetings and other civic and business functions.
- Performs other relevant and related duties as required.

- Requires an undergraduate degree in Business, Communications, Marketing or related discipline plus a minimum of five years of progressively more responsible positions within community relations/outreach, business/partnership development or related business or non-profit experience. An equivalent combination of education and relevant experience may be considered.
- Demonstrated record of successful community outreach and partnership development.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills in both English and Spanish. Proven public speaking skills.
- Excellent time management, program planning and organizational skills.
- Experience working with Microsoft Applications such as Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
- Working knowledge of financial industry products, services and industry trends.
- Strong ability to multi-task and work under time constraints to meet project deadlines.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Excellent ability to communicate, both verbally and in writing; ability to tolerate periods ofcontinuous sitting.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
- Work is primarily performed outside the office with extensive business travel/driving required.
Required to attend frequent meetings/events in evenings or on weekends.Subject to standard
background noise found in an office environment and during travel time, subject to variable
weather and traffic conditions.
Note: Staff is expected to perform various tasks, projects and administrative duties as assigned.Management reserves the right to assign or change duties and tasks to this position at their discretion.
Salary Range (annually)
