Position Summary
This position is responsible for overseeing the consultant bridge design review program for the department and is the main Bureau of Structures (BOS) contact/authority for consultant bridge projects. This position determines which projects and/or consultant firms should be reviewed and to what level of detail. This position also monitors projects to ensure that plans and design computations are submitted with adequate lead time for review so that project schedules are not compromised. The position coordinates with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) to ensure that adequate oversight is provided to address federal requirements. This position completes complex technical engineering duties and requires independent decision making with corresponding high-level accountability.
This position performs an independent bridge project review of the most complex consultant-designed structures, which includes reviewing design computations, load ratings, and plans. These include (but are not limited to) non-standard bridges, steel plated girder structures, post-tensioned elements, long-span bridges, curved and highly skewed bridges; complicated railroad, movable span, sign, and pedestrian bridges; bridge rehabilitation and structural repairs; noise barriers, foundations, and retaining structures in problem soils. These structures may be designed in steel, concrete, timber, or any combination of these materials. This position incorporates the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Specifications for Highway Bridges, the AASHTO Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) Bridge Design Specifications, the Wisconsin Bridge Manual, and other design aids. At the advanced level, this position trains and coaches other BOS project members as well as consultant project members.
The Consultant Bridge Project Engineer works with BOS, Division of Transportation System Development (DTSD) region, and consultant staff in overseeing the bridge design review program for the department. This position also manages the work of consultants under BOS contract who review consultant designed structures for the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT). This includes providing guidance to the consultant reviewers. The position examines plans to ensure completeness and accuracy for bidding and construction purposes. This position also works closely with consultants and government agencies, and coordinates bridge projects with the Bureau of Project Development (BPD), the Structures Design, Maintenance, and Development Sections in BOS, Project Development and Systems Operations Sections in the DTSD region offices, and the FHWA.

Salary Information
The Senior level is in schedule-range 14-13 with an annual salary of $82,846 - $101,421, plus excellent benefits.
The Advanced level is in schedule-range 14-13 with an annual salary of $96,387 - $108,950, plus excellent benefits. Plus, an additional $2,080 per year for a Professional Engineer License.
A twelve month probationary period is required. Pay for current state employees will be set in accordance with the Wisconsin State Compensation Plan.

This position requires the ability to occasionally travel independently statewide.

Minimum requirement: Upon application, candidate must have graduated from an Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC) ABET accredited college or university with a 4-year bachelor's degree (or master's or PhD) in engineering OR possess a PE license (registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of Wisconsin OR a valid Professional Engineering registration and be able to obtain a Wisconsin PE registration within 3 months if PE registration is from another state).
