Job Description: Controller, Canadian Branch

How does this role contribute to our collective success?

As a Legal Entity Controller in Group Finance, the person is responsible for oversight of External Reporting for AXIS Reinsurance Company's Canadian Branch. This person will have direct interactions with Canada Branch senior leaders, as well as interface with teams in respective AXIS businesses units across the globe. This person will also be responsible for reviewing and analyzing the process metrics and drive improvements. The key to success for this person will be to manage a timely and quality delivery of services, driving change and innovation within Legal Entity Reporting, culminating in predictable and automated process, enhanced productivity and controllership.

What will you do in this role?

  • Prepare annual/quarterly regulatory filing P&C2 and IFRS financial statements
  • Prepare quarterly financial statement analysis and commentary
  • Prepare quarterly financial statement projections and forecast for Branch Asset Adequacy Test to ensure maintaining target ratio
  • Review and approve quarterly premium tax accruals, submit interim installments and file annual premium tax returns.
  • Support NA Tax department and AXIS external tax consultants with relevant working papers to compute quarterly and YE tax provisions.
  • Manage and coordinate financial and regulatory audits
  • Prepare legal entity business plan and full financial and BAAT statements
  • Work with Risk Management in the preparation of the Branch OSRA report
  • Work with the Branch's Appointed Actuary in the preparation and filing of the FCT and AAR
  • Coordinate the AAR and FCT actuarial peer reviews and submit peer reviews to the OSFI and the AMF.
  • Maintain regulatory compliance management to support compliance with OSFI guidelines and legislative requirements
  • Establish, monitor and enforce internal controls in accordance with group policy
  • Work closely with peers across the corporation to implement company-wide initiatives.
  • Work with department managers to develop (and update) annual operating budget and three-year strategic plan, providing critical assessments of available efficiencies or potential cost savings
  • Ensure compliance with local, provincial, and federal fiscal reporting requirements
  • Submit monthly sales taxes to the appropriate provincial treasury
  • Coordinate the annual market conduct filing working with Legal, A&H Insurance UW and Claims
  • Work with the CAT management to ensure that annual CAT filing is completed and filed.
  • Develop and maintain corporate accounting policies to ensure the adequacy and effectiveness of internal controls over external Financial Reporting, supporting compliance with Section 404 of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act
  • Keep current with emerging and newly released or updated OSFI standards and IFRS regulations and interpretations and other applicable accounting standards & regulations applicable to Canada.
  • Review all processes regularly and propose opportunities of standardization, transformation and automation

About You:

What you need to have:

  • CPA/CA/CMA with minimum 9 years accounting experience, including at least 4 years in External Reporting
  • In-Depth knowledge of Insurance and Reinsurance business as it relates to Finance
  • Strong understanding of IFRS US GAAP
  • Strong understanding of Statutory Reporting requirements in Canada
  • Strong understanding of SOX compliance requirements with respect to Financial Reporting processes
  • Technical acumen to understand Ceded Re, IBNR & other related concepts
  • Experienced with financial systems (Oracle GL), business performance management systems and experience with business intelligence software
  • Strong understanding of end-to-end G&A and Ledger closing process
  • Commercially savvy and possesses excellent analytical skills to understand numbers and their implications on the business
