ROLE OVERVIEW
Reporting to the Director of Finance, the Controller is responsible for the day-to-day accounting for MSF-USA's financial transactions and for developing, implementing, and ensuring compliance with financial policies and procedures consistent with accepted accounting principles ("GAAP"). The Controller is responsible for maintaining and continuously improving the system of financial controls, including general accounting, investment accounting, tax compliance and planning, budgeting, banking, payroll, and benefits.

DEPARTMENT ACCOUNTABILITIES
Budgeting
Set, analyze, and monitor budgets aligned with organization strategy; identify financial trends.

Treasury
Design, develop, and deliver treasury strategies and operations.

Financial Policies, Guidelines, and Protocols
Develop financial guidelines and protocols in response to statutory and economic requirements.

Operational Compliance
Adhere to internal policies, procedures, and external standards, including regulatory and voluntary codes of conduct, to minimize business risk and protect the organization's reputation.

Organizational Risk Management
Develop and/or deliver activities to monitor the organization's risk profile and limit its exposure to undue risks.

Financial reporting
Overseeing the financial reporting process, including preparing and publishing monthly financial statements

Budgeting and forecasting
Analyzing financial statements to identify opportunities to reduce costs and increase revenue and managing budgeting and forecasting processes

Accounting tasks
Managing the accounting team, including hiring, training, and performance evaluations

Cash flow management
Help manage cash flow and participated in the daily decision-making process.

COMPLEXITY AND PROBLEM-SOLVING SKILLS
Solid experience coordinating audit activities and managing reporting, budget development and analysis, accounts payable and receivable, general ledger, payroll, and accounting for investments
A history in grants management, as it relates to compliance and reporting of government, corporate, and foundation grants, is essential
Technology savvy with experience selecting and overseeing software installations and managing relationships with software vendors; advanced knowledge of accounting and reporting software
Keen analytic, organization, and critical thinking skills, which allow for strategic data interpretation versus simple reporting
Strong interpersonal and communication skills; experience in effectively communicating critical data, including presentations to senior management, board, or other outside partners

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
This is an extraordinary opportunity for a mature leader with seven to ten years of accounting and finance experience, ideally beginning with accounting and audit, followed by experience gathering, evaluating, presenting, and reporting financial information to executive teams and external stakeholders. S/he will ideally have experience in a complex nonprofit that has multiple programs.

Minimum of a BA; CPA preferred

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS

Travel as needed, 20%

COMPENSATION

$101,769 - $152,653; based on experience

Our staff works a hybrid schedule with the ability to come into either the NYC office or regional hub (Washington, DC or Bay Area, California) a minimum of 2 times a week. The required days are Tuesdays and Wednesdays from January to June and September to December.

In office work attendance during July and August is optional.
