Job Purpose/Summary

Directs and coordinates organization's financial affairs according to GAAP-compliance. Is responsible for overseeing the accounting operations of the organization, ensuring accurate financial reporting, maintaining internal controls, and providing financial analysis to support strategic decision-making. This role involves supervising the accounting manager and ensuring compliance with all financial regulations applicable to nonprofits.

Duties and Responsibilities

Accounting
  • Oversee and ensure the enactment of organization's monthly financial procedures, including processing income, receivables, payables, credit cards, and cash accounts.
  • Oversee, analyze and monitor Accounts Payable and generation of payments.
  • Oversee and review reconciliation of bank statements.
  • Maintain General Journal entries and ledger. Monitor account balances and perform account analysis including problem resolution. Oversee or generate all required month-end journal reports and general ledger reports and close general ledger monthly.

Financial Management
  • Provide assurance that the agency follows Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and that methodology is in accordance with standards for non-profit reporting.
  • Provide Program Directors and Managers with monthly financial statements and comparison to budget along with other requested reports. Monitor financial reports for completeness and accuracy.
  • Assist CFOO with providing Executive Directors and Board of Directors with financial reports, analysis and review. Assist CFOO with finance committee meetings and reporting.
  • Assist with annual audit process. Leading elements of accounting and federal funding sections of the audit. Manage filing of Form 990.
  • Assist Executive Directors and State Department leads in monitoring financial performance to budget.
  • Assist in the monitoring of grant budgets and the enactment of financial procedures and policies related to specific grants.
  • Serve as the point of contact for all banking services. Maintain, evaluate and recommend optimum-banking services required by the organization.
  • Develop new systems to support the financial and accounting needs of the organization, as necessary.
  • Review and refine accounting procedures for the organization

Supervise Accounting Manager Functions
  • Oversee Accounting & Payroll Manager in the responsibilities of that role including bi-weekly payroll, journal entries, allocations and reporting.
  • Ensure administration of the Organization's 403b Plan audit and 5500 filing.
  • Oversee and assist with the maintenance and management of contracts/agreements with vendors. Analyze cost savings and tax benefits.
  • Foster a collaborative and positive work environment.
  • Conduct performance evaluations and support professional development opportunities for direct report staff.

Qualifications and Competencies

Qualifications include:
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited university in the field of Accounting or related preferred.
  • 5 or more years experience in accounting and/or finance management.
  • Knowledgeable of GAAP and non-profit financial standards; experience in non-profit organization preferred.
  • Good communication, problem-solving skills and proactive perspective.
  • Experience using NetSuite, ADP and Donor Perfect for non-profits preferred.

  • Operate office equipment
  • Work environment is indoors and climate controlled. Frequently exposed to outdoor weather conditions.
  • Travel required to and from school sites.
  • Moderate noise levels as found in a business office and classroom setting.
  • Use of own automobile.
