Classification: Regular, Full-Time, FLSA Exempt

Pay Range: $115,000 - $145,000 Annually DOE

Founded in 1971, BHI provides social rehabilitation including a full range of Medi-Cal services to adults with co-occurring serious mental health and substance use disorders.

The successful candidate will be a mission-driven collaborative leader with at least 5 years of accounting and leadership experience, process minded and have experience with change management. They will have the demonstrated ability to gather, evaluate, present and report financial information to executive teams, external stakeholders and staff. Experience in a complex nonprofit organization would be ideal.

This position supervises the day-to-day activities and staff performing one or more functional areas and performs related work as required.

The Controller leads the activities of the accounting department for the accurate and timely dissemination of financial management reports including internal and external monthly financial statements, annual audits and annual budgets in conformity with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and other regulatory requirements. The Controller monitors progress and changes and keep senior leadership abreast of Bonita House's financial status.
  • Oversee the agency's full accounting activities, including fund accounting with multiple funding sources, payroll, AR & AP, budget preparation and management, and fiscal reporting with various Federal, State, County and City funding proposals.
  • Work closely with the Director of Finance in establishing policies and procedures for the management of accounting practices within the organization
  • Optimize and scale accounting policies, procedures, and systems to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and compliance. Drive process improvements, incorporating best practices in system design, automation, and operational workflows
  • Manage agency financial systems, including the general ledger and accounting software.
  • Responsible for accounting software integrations with systems for payroll / HRIS, expense management and banking and financial institutions
  • Ensure the month-end and quarter-end close processes accurately and on time, within 15 days. Ensure the year-end close processes accurately and on time to complete the annual audit within regulatory requirements of 90 days.
  • Coordinate the annual financial audits, including single audit if needed, scheduled audits by funding agencies, and tax return preparation with outside contractor
  • Ensure legal and regulatory compliance regarding all financial functions
  • Supervise the activities of the disbursement function, ensuring the accurate and timely processing of accounts payable, purchase orders, credit card payments, core employee expense reports, cash control, timely clearing of stale dated checks, payroll processing and total payroll tax compliance
  • Direct the activities of accounts receivable to ensure the accurate and timely management of all accounts receivable aging components including billings, cash receipts application, etc; quarter and year-end payroll closing including federal and state reports; and check statistic management
  • Develop and monitor organizational and department budgets in collaboration with leadership team
  • Manage cash flow planning for Bonita House and related entities, and ensure availability of funds as needed
  • Implement and enforce accounting policies, procedures, internal controls, and business processes to safeguard assets and support compliant, transparent, and efficient execution of agency business. Provide user documentation and training to foster a culture of compliance and a good internal control environment.
  • Performs regular audits of major accounting functions (i.e. billing, accounts receivable/payable, payroll, etc.) to ensure standards are being met
  • In partnership with the Director of Finance develop and maintain forward-looking, predictive models and activity-based financial analyses to provide insight into the organization's operations and business plans
  • Comply with up-to-date nonprofit audit best practices as well as state and federal law regarding nonprofit operations
  • Ensure that finance and accounting staff maintain financial record systems in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and monitor the use of all funds
  • Lead Projects and perform other duties as assigned


Qualifications:
  • Bachelor level degree in accounting or related field required. A higher or comparable degree with appropriate coursework will also be considered.
  • 5-7 years' progressive nonprofit accounting experience; preferably in a nonprofit organization with a budget of at least $10 million. Healthcare experience including knowledge of Medi-Cal billing is a plus
  • Minimum two (2) years' previous experience successfully managing employees on a direct supervisory basis
  • Previous administrative/management experience in accounting field highly preferred
  • Previous experience managing the payroll function for a business strongly preferred
  • Demonstrated and verifiable ability to plan and direct financial operations, regularly making information-based decisions in a fast-paced environment
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a team, in collaborative settings required.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills required
  • Demonstrated ability to initiate and complete work without direct supervision and to work effectively under pressure required
  • Demonstrated ability to provide leadership to staff and to build the trust and respect of staff, colleagues, external contacts, and other management members
  • Excellent problem-solving skills required, including creativity, resourcefulness, timeliness, and technical knowledge related to analyzing and resolving financial / administrative problems
  • Sensitivity to needs of culturally and linguistically diverse patient and employee population
  • Willingness and ability to work some evenings and weekends, as needed
  • Solid experience coordinating audit and tax preparation activities and managing reporting, budget development and analysis, accounts payable and receivable, general ledger, payroll, and accounting for investments for a complex nonprofit with multiple funding sources including government contracts and an affiliate structure
  • Strong applied knowledge of GAAP in practice in nonprofit accounting, including sophisticated fund and grant accounting, compliance, and reporting
  • Demonstrated ability to utilize computer technology and willingness to develop and adapt to the evolving technological requirements of modern mental health and wellness organization required. High level of competency working on PC-based accounting software, Excel required
  • Technology savvy with experience selecting and overseeing software installations and managing relationships with software vendors in the cloud; advanced knowledge of accounting and reporting software. Experience with ABILA MIP nonprofit accounting software preferred.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and consistently meet project deadlines.
