Position Summary:
The Controller is responsible for overseeing all aspects of financial management, compliance, and reporting for St. Vincent de Paul. This role ensures the organization's financial stability by maintaining strong internal controls, budgeting, and accurate financial reporting. Additionally, the Controller will support and provide financial expertise in the grant writing process, ensuring proper financial documentation, reporting, and compliance for grant-funded programs.
The ideal candidate is a mission-driven finance professional with strong nonprofit accounting experience, financial leadership skills, and the ability to collaborate across departments to support grant acquisition and compliance.

Additionally, the Controller will support and provide financial expertise in the grant writing process, ensuring proper financial documentation, reporting, and compliance for grant-funded programs.

Key Responsibilities:
Financial Management & Compliance:
- Oversee all accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, payroll, and financial reporting.
- Prepare and analyze monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements to ensure accuracy and compliance with GAAP and nonprofit financial regulations.
- Lead the annual budgeting process, working closely with leadership to align financial planning with organizational goals.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local financial regulations, including IRS 501(c)(3) requirements.
- Manage and coordinate the annual audit process, working with external auditors to ensure timely and accurate reporting.
- Maintain and implement financial controls and policies to safeguard the organization's assets.
- Oversee cash flow management, investment strategies, and financial forecasting.
Grant Writing Support & Compliance:
- Serve as a financial expert in the grant writing process, providing key financial data, budget projections, and compliance support.
- Review and approve grant budgets to ensure alignment with organizational financial goals and funding requirements.
- Oversee financial tracking and reporting for grants, ensuring compliance with grant terms and donor restrictions.
- Work closely with program staff and development teams to provide financial insights for grant applications and funding proposals.
- Ensure proper allocation and documentation of grant funds in accordance with nonprofit accounting standards.
Leadership & Strategic Support:
- Provide financial insights and recommendations to the Executive Director and Board of Directors to support strategic decision-making.
- Collaborate with department heads to develop financial strategies for program sustainability and growth.
- Train and mentor finance and administrative staff to promote best practices in nonprofit financial management.
- Support fundraising initiatives by providing financial data and reports for donor and sponsor communications.
Qualifications & Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; CPA or CMA preferred.
- Minimum of 5+ years of experience in accounting, financial management, or nonprofit finance.
- Experience with grant budgeting, tracking, and financial reporting (direct grant writing experience not required).
- Strong knowledge of GAAP, fund accounting, and federal grant regulations (such as OMB Uniform Guidance).
- Proficiency in QuickBooks, financial software, and donor management systems is a plus.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate across departments.
