The Controller manages the month-end and year-end accounting close processes, preparation for the annual financial audit and 990, and assists the Senior Director of Finance with preparation of monthly financial reports.

Position SummaryProvides oversight and review of accounting operations focusing on daily financial operations, revenue recognition, general ledger management, payroll, and maintaining accurate and timely financial records. The Controller manages the month-end and year-end accounting close processes, preparation for the annual financial audit and 990, and assists the Senior Director of Finance with preparation of monthly financial reports.
Essential Job Functions
- Oversee general ledger and accounting functions and systems, ensuring compliance with appropriate GAAP standards and regulatory requirements while maintaining accurate financial accounts for USA Triathlon and USA Triathlon Foundation. Prepares monthly bank reconciliations, collections, and adjusting journal entries.
- Reviews and posts all banking, accounts receivable, accounts payable transactions, and monthly journal entries by Staff Accountants and Accounting Coordinator. Oversees the month-end closing process and general ledger reconciliations. Generates monthly reports under the direction of the Senior Director
- Provides asset and depreciation management
- Assists and helps manage annual financial audit including collecting, reviewing, and providing accurate documentation. Coordinates with the Senior Director to accurately complete the annual 990.
- Reviews, assists, and helps manage daily financial operational duties, including tracking financial data, invoicing, accounts payable, and accounts receivable. Monitors cash flow, accounts, and other financial transactions.
- Generates and compiles financial reports as requested by internal and external stakeholders
- Assists in organization-wide budgeting, forecasting, and planning
- Oversee all payroll-related activities, including ensuring timely and accurate payroll and year-end forms
- Identifies and elevates issues, risks, and mitigations through effective analysis
- In conjunction with the Senior Director, helps create, update and maintain finance policies and standard operating procedures; trains and educates staff on policies and procedures, as needed
- Identify opportunities for process improvement, internal controls, and be a thought partner for the Senior Director in areas of fiscal management
Supervisory Responsibilities
- Staff Accountant (USAT focus), Staff Accountant (Foundation focus), and Accounting Coordinator
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Strong knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
- Excellent problem-solving skills
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment as part of a team atmosphere, including effective coordination with members of other departments
- Highly organized and able to prioritize tasks; attention to detail is a must
- Working knowledge of financial management software and systems
- Excellent use of MS Office products, especially MS Excel
- Proven track record of strong supervisory experience, including team leadership, performance management, and conflict resolution.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting or related field required
- 6 - 8 years of relevant experience in the field;
- 1 - 3 years of Foundation Accounting experience preferred
- 1-3 years of Nonprofit experience required
- CPA or Master's degree preferred

- This is an in-office position; while full-time remote work is not an option, hybrid flexibility can be discussed.
- May require evening or weekend work during busy times
- Must be able to lift and carry items up to 25 pounds occasionally (e.g., office supplies, small equipment, files).
