MP Materials is seeking a hands-on Controls Engineer to be an integral part of the team designing and building a new metal, alloy, and magnet-making facility. This is a rare opportunity to have a central role in the development of a greenfield advanced manufacturing facility and helping to define the future of American manufacturing. The ideal candidate is an "Impact Player" that will provide technical advice and guidance for all phases of SCADA projects. Develop Engineering projects utilizing new technology to constantly upgrade and improve site safety, efficiencies, cost controls, quality controls and protection of the environment.

The new facility will contain a broad range of chemical, mechanical, and thermal processes. Because of the broad range of processes in use, it is important that the Controls Engineer be able to engage with a broad range of technical specialists and gain a working understanding of the physical processes, key control metrics, and potential hazards involved. A key aspect of this role will be the development, operation, and continuous improvement of a unified Mission Control Center in the facility to capture and report live and historical data from all of the above processes, including the integrated and consistent development of each networked machine's control system.

Essential Duties:
  • Work within the MP Materials Magnetics team to define and execute a strategy for the design, automation, and continuous improvement of process equipment and facilities.
  • Support the development of SCADA software applications, consisting of creating or modifying graphical screens for real-time data, historical trends, alarm management, interfaces for set point entry and manual remote control.
  • Perform system and database backups and provide user support for data retrieval and creating reports from those databases.
  • Develop, maintain, and validate data to meet operator requirements.
  • Perform testing with regional personnel for commissioning of SCADA data points.
  • Coordinate with remote assets on major Skids.
  • Work with Operations to develop or update points list.
  • Work with Operations to integrate new assets and field devices.
  • Coordinate with the networking, systems and operations team to integrate new acquisitions into the control center.
  • Manage procurement, vendors, maintenance, contractors, operators, and other team members to complete projects, focusing on speed of execution, financial discipline, and minimized EHS impact.
  • Perform all work and design all equipment and facilities to world class environmental, health, and safety standards.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Basic Qualifications:
  • BS in computer science, math, electrical, mechanical, chemical, or related engineering field or relevant experience.
  • Three to seven years of experience developing SCADA and BMS systems, preferably in a project-based industry.
  • Experience with Factory Talk View, Tia Portal is a huge plus.
  • Experience in working in diverse, multifunctional teams of engineers and operators in an industrial setting.
  • Experience in facility design, infrastructure, and Capital Equipment Acquisition.
  • Entrepreneurial mindset, with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple concurrent projects.

Desired Qualities:
  • Technical knowledge of industrial automation, sensors, and controls.
  • Hands-on experience in the implementation and operation of industrial process automation.
  • Ability to identify and solve problems, and effectively communicate and advocate for solutions.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Expert level user of Microsoft Office suite.
