The Division of Counseling & Student Development is dedicated to providing personal, social, cultural, transformational, academic, and community counseling support for decentralized academic programs and Kinesiology/Athletics students. The Counselor (Kinesiology/Athletics) position involves fulfilling all related counseling duties. Cypress counselors are decentralized and embedded within their respective divisions, working directly with students majoring in and participating in activities within this division. Counseling strategies will focus on Kinesiology academic majors for certificate, AA, AS Degrees, and ADT programs, as well as adhering to 3C2A rules and regulations.

The Cypress College Athletics Program offers a variety of sports and is committed to providing student-athletes with a quality education. The program aims to support students through counseling, mentorship, and exposure to educational experiences on and off campus. It also supports students interested in athletic recruitment and earning certificates/degrees towards career and academic goals.

Job Description

The Counselor in this role will instruct COUN 140 C, freshman orientation, specified for student athletes. This counselor will have the opportunity to work with the Kinesiology/Athletics faculty, as well as, district administrative members on and off campus in support, providing these students with a robust academic and social experience.

The Counselor will teach COUN 140C and related courses to a diverse student population.

Provide academic, personal, and career exploration with students in preparation towards their goals.

Work collaboratively with Kinesiology administrators, faculty, staff, coaches and all units that represent this department, following 3C2A requirements, rules, and regulations.

The Kinesiology/Athletics Counselor will have at minimum a 1:1 counseling relationship with each caseload student and will provide counseling support as needed throughout the student's experience at Cypress College.

Counselor will work with students to create and complete a student education plan (SEP) and discuss topics related to major requirements, life planning, career exploration, and transfer requirements.

Support recruitment efforts, as well as providing high efforts of securing student retention.

Participate in curriculum development and serve on department, division, college and district committees as necessary to maintain and improve the instructional program; participate in appropriate professional development activities.

Participate in co-curricular activities, including planning, implementing, and teaching in special programs designed to support student success.

Participate in the formulation of Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) and the Student Learning Outcomes assessment cycle.

Maintain formal office and campus hours; participate in department and division meetings.

Maintain current knowledge of instructional methods and new technologies pertinent to areas of assignment; learn and apply emerging technologies and advances (e.g., computer software applications) as necessary to perform duties in an efficient, organized and timely manner.

Teach scheduled classes and perform related duties as assigned, including timely compliance with clerical and administrative responsibilities; comply with district, college and division policies in the performance of duties.

Instruct and assist in the growth and success of a diverse population of students through careful preparation of course materials, effective teaching methodologies and informed critical feedback on assignments and discussions.

Develop culturally relevant course content, culturally responsive pedagogical techniques, and effective practices for engaging students who are diverse and/or are students who are historically underserved. The ideal candidate should have experience in this area with African American, Latinx, Native Americans, Pacific Islanders and other disproportionately impacted students.

Work cooperatively with staff and students.

On campus, online, evening and/or Saturday assignments may be required as part of the regular contract.

Minimum Qualifications

Master's in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy or marriage, family and child counseling

OR

Possess a valid California teaching credential authorizing service in a community college in the appropriate subject matter area.

OR

The equivalent. Equivalent qualifications may include related education, training, employment and professional experience that would be equal to the required degree(s) and experience in this field as determined by the District Equivalency Committee.

The applicant must be able to demonstrate how these factors relate to the need for equity minded practices within the classroom.

(NOTE: A bachelor's degree in one of the listed degrees and a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) is an alternative qualification for this discipline.)

Desirable Qualifications

Specific and intentional outreach to historically and socially minoritized/marginalized communities such as African American/Black, Hispanic, Pacific Islander, Native American, women, LGBTQIA+, and people with disabilities.

Examples need not relate to Athletics but would be exemplary. Experience designing and teaching curricula responsive to the needs of historically underrepresented and/or marginalized students.

At least 2 years providing Academic Advisement to Community College students.

Active participation in the 3C4A.

At least 2 years providing Athletic Advisement in a Community College or

extensive background in the athletic recruiting process and knowledge of 3C2A eligibility requirements.

Initial salary placement will be determined by the Office of Human Resources in accordance with the faculty collective bargaining agreement and is not negotiable.
