Position Information
The purpose of this classification is to conduct criminal investigations for the District Attorney's Office.

Essential Functions

Investigates crimes; obtains police reports, crime scene reports, crime lab reports, complaints, petitions, citations, photos, audio recordings, video recordings, written statements, phone records, medical records, and other accounts of crimes committed; reviews those items for probable cause, for evidence of crimes committed, for witnesses needed for court, and for potential problems in proving the case; compiles an investigative report that summarizes all parties' roles in the case and the events that took place; visits the crime scene if necessary and takes additional material, photos, or measurements, or creates sketches; ensures that required analysis of evidence has been completed; reviews current law for changes that may have a bearing on case presentation; prepares copies for defense attorneys in discovery; obtains criminal histories on witnesses, victims, and defendants; obtains search warrants when necessary and then executes them; and coordinates transportation for victims and witnesses.

Coordinates with Assistant District Attorneys (ADAs); meets with ADAs to review case files and determine what investigation is needed; assist ADAs with witness and victim interviews, some of which take place in the field; and helps formulate case and courtroom strategies.

Coordinates and communicates with police; obtains property or evidence from the police department or crime lab that will be needed for court; interviews police officers or detectives regarding their role in the investigation; and delivers subpoenas to officers or detectives at least 24 hours prior to any court hearing.

Attends court; attends court and participates in the prosecution of cases; coordinates with police officers regarding their testimony; coordinates with victims and witnesses regarding their testimony; ensures that any and all evidence needed for court is properly prepared and made available; assists ADAs in presentation of the case in court; testifies on investigative actions and findings; prepares exhibits for court; and assists in presentation of exhibits in court.

Participates in tactical teams; participates in team actions to serve subpoenas, search warrants, and arrest warrants; attends practice and training sessions to achieve and maintain the required proficiency with weapons; maintains assigned equipment; attends specialized tactical training programs; makes arrests when required; and serves on protection details for witnesses, victims, and staff.

Processes a variety of documentation associated with department/division operations, within designated timeframes and per established procedures; receives and reviews various documentation, including police reports, investigative summaries, case files, crime scene and crime lab reports and diagrams, various forensic reports, court records and documents, and witness statements; reviews, completes, processes, forwards or retains as appropriate; prepares or completes various forms, reports, correspondence, and other documentation, including case reports, file notes, employee performance summaries, and various team statistics reports; compiles data for further processing or for use in preparation of department reports; and maintains computerized and/or hardcopy records.

Communicates with supervisor, investigators, law enforcement personnel, judges, attorneys, victims and witnesses, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.

Minimum Qualifications

Associate Degree in Criminal Justice, or related field required; supplemented by five years of experience in criminal investigations to include lead or supervisory experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
Licenses and Certifications

Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License; must possess and maintain POST certification.

Physical Abilities

Tasks require the ability to exert very moderate physical effort in light work, typically involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling, and which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (12-20 pounds).

Sensory Requirements

Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, taste, odor, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.

Environmental Factors

Research functions are regularly performed without exposure to adverse environmental conditions; performance of investigator or law officer functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, hazardous materials, traffic hazards, toxic agents, human bites, explosives, firearms, violence, and pathogenic substances.
