Position Details

Biocore has an immediate opening for a full-time Data Engineer. The right individual will support the Data Science and Analytics team and the entire Biocore organization on a variety of interesting projects. The position is based at our primary office in Charlottesville, VA.
Employment Type
  • Full-time, exempt employee
  • In person at offices in Charlottesville, VA
  • Willingness to travel up to 10%.
Position Requirements
  • B.S. or M.S. in a STEM discipline requiring computational programming: computer science, computer engineering, software engineering, data science, statistics, physics, applied math, etc.
  • Prior experience building out a modern data platform to support small-to-medium sized businesses with data catalogs, observability, and data quality monitoring
  • Exceptional proficiency in Python and SQL
  • Experience working with AWS, specifically technologies like Lambda, Step Functions, Glue, and Athena
  • Demonstrated experience designing, developing, and managing databases and APIs to support analytics, machine learning, and research workflows
  • Experience in MLOps and integrating machine learning workloads with databases desired
  • Experience working with professional or collegiate sports leagues or teams (NFL, NBA, MLB, Premier League) desired

Our job titles may span more than one career level. Actual base pay is dependent upon many factors, such as: training, transferable skills, work experience, business needs and market demands. Roles and Responsibilities

Our team fuses data streams from athlete-worn sensors, computer vision output of game and practice video, human-conducted game tagging/rating systems (e.g. PFF.com), and various SQL/NoSQL databases to maintain a comprehensive picture of athlete health, safety, and performance. You will lead a team of data analysts to develop and package insights and research from across the company to be used for presentation to senior executives in supported sports leagues and in work with owners/coaches/executives on key committees (for example the NFL Competition Committee) to implement rule changes, policies, and protocols that improve health and safety outcomes for athletes. Your work will span multiple sports and industries. Example problems you might address include:
  • Developing data pipelines, databases, and dashboards to support computer vision workloads that process game video to automatically detect and log helmet impacts in American football
  • Developing an API to support the delivery of daily load statistics (total distance, high speed acceleration events, etc.) derived from performance tracking sensors worn by athletes in practice
  • Developing ETL pipelines to consolidate data from disparate sources including SQL databases, REST and GraphQL APIs, and Excel spreadsheets into a data warehouse
  • Designing a database to store the results of thousands of laboratory tests of sports safety equipment such as helmets, cleats, and shoulder pads
