What are Trust Fund Positions?

Trust Fund positions are unique to the Smithsonian. They are paid for from a variety of sources, including the Smithsonian endowment, revenue from our business activities, donations, grants and contracts. OVERVIEW

This position is located within the Smithsonian Institution (SI) Office of Digital Transformation (ODT). Smithsonian Institution (SI) is embarking on Institution-wide digital transformation led by ODT, to become a digitally empowered Institution that builds purposeful connections between the knowledge we share and the people we serve, inviting every household, classroom, and community around the globe on a lasting journey to explore, learn, and find meaning together.

This position is part of the Chief Data Office (CDO) responsible for delivering data-informed, actionable insights that support Smithsonian's digital transformation and the advancement of Smithsonian's business and organizational goals using data and analytics.

The incumbent serves as a Data Scientist within ODT. Supports the delivery of data-informed, actionable insights to support leadership in achieving Institutional goals while also fostering a data- informed culture across SI.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Manages analytic initiatives, applying a diverse set of models, tools, and decision science techniques to enhance program operations.
  • Participates in discovery processes with internal and external stakeholders to identify requirements, expected outcomes, and measures of success.
  • Adapts mathematical, statistical, artificial intelligence (e.g., machine learning, large language models), and other quantitative methods and techniques to solve problems and/or forecast outcomes. Applies understanding of data science and technology to evaluate organizational performance and audience engagement related to pan-institutional strategic goals and to provide actionable insights.
  • Applies a variety of data analytic tools and techniques to produce findings and insights from structured or unstructured data.
  • Designs and develops presentations, visual reports, and data visualizations (e.g., interactive dashboards, charts, tables, and graphs) tailored to specific audiences and stakeholders.


QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
  • Professional knowledge of computer science, data science, statistics, and/or a closely related field.
  • Skill in applying data science principles, concepts, methods, and standards and in providing technical advice, guidance, and recommendations on critical issues.
  • Skill in database development and management, app development, and statistical analysis.
  • Professional knowledge of programming languages like SQL, R and Python.
  • Skill in preparing data-focused dashboards with maps, graphs, and other visualizations.
  • Ability to use GitHub and/or Git for version control, collaboration, and CI/CD.
  • Knowledge of machine learning frameworks such as PyTorch and Tensorflow.
  • Knowledge of data management and analysis techniques.
  • Ability to develop and manage production analytics and visualization resources for internal teams and the public.
  • Skill in managing large datasets.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Skills in project management, innovation, and problem-solving.
