The Product Support and Logistics Division (PSLD) is one of the most innovative divisions within Caterpillar. Job Summary

As a Data Scientist, you will leverage your quantitative analysis, data management, modeling and/or data visualization skills as an individual contributor to project teams tasked with solving business problems. This position is a part of the Caterpillar Inventory Management Research Team, which uses quantitative methods such as business simulations, data mining, machine learning, and advanced statistical techniques to solve problems.

What You Will Do:
  • Analytics-based research supporting project teams
  • Using programming languages such as Python, R, SAS, SQL, and/or Dataiku and apply machine learning models to research solutions to business problems
  • Statistical modeling and analysis of Caterpillar and dealer parts demand & inventory
  • Improvement of existing and development of new inventory optimization techniques
  • Execution and analysis of inventory management simulations
  • Creation of PowerBI dashboards for reporting and exploratory analysis
  • Ad-hoc data analysis, data processing, and data visualization
  • Developing/refining large-scale solutions to fit complex situations in multiple unique environments
  • Building familiarity with Inventory Management system functionality and parts management practices
  • Effective communication of complex concepts and solutions to stakeholders & internal customers


What You Have (Required Skills):

Analytical Thinking: Knowledge of techniques and tools that promote effective analysis; ability to determine the root cause of organizational problems and create alternative solutions that resolve these problems.

Machine Learning: Knowledge of principles, technologies and algorithms of machine learning; ability to develop, implement and deliver related systems, products and services.
Explains the definition and objectives of machine learning.
Describes the algorithms and logic of machine learning.
Distinguishes between machine learning and deep learning.
Gives several examples on the implementation of machine learning.

Query and Database Access Tools: Knowledge of data management systems; ability to use, support and access facilities for searching, extracting and formatting data for further use.
Defines, creates and tests simple queries by using associated command language in a specific environment.
Applies appropriate query tools used to connect to the data warehouse.
Obtains and analyzes query access path information and query results.
Employs tested query statements to retrieve, insert, update and delete information.
Works with advanced features and functions including sorting, filtering and making simple calculations.

What Will Set You Apart (Preferred Skills):
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Analytics, Data Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, or Industrial Engineering with quantitative and technically challenging coursework
  • Knowledge of basic statistical approaches and/or data management techniques
  • Experience with analytical and statistical modeling and analysis tools like Python, R, SAS, and/or SQL
  • Experience with data visualization and analytical software like Power BI or Tableau
  • Demonstrated experience working in MS Office Suite of programs
  • Experience utilizing quantitative analysis
  • Experience in machine learning models and/or deep learning (AI) using tools like Python, R, and/or Dataiku
  • Demonstrates the ability to communicate effectively verbally with digital media and concepts using data visualization
  • Experience in automation tools such as Power Automate or Excel VBA
  • Enthusiasm for big data processing, research, analytics, and problem solving
  • Previous inventory management background and knowledge
  • Demonstrates teamwork, initiative, and interpersonal skills
  • Highly proficient written and verbal communication skills

Summary Pay Range:
$87,480.00 - $142,200.00

Compensation and benefits offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, job level, market location, job-related knowledge, skills, individual performance and experience. Please note that salary is only one component of total compensation at Caterpillar.
