BASIC FUNCTION:

As a Data Visualization Developer, you will support the Civil Court Data Initiative (CCDI) within LSC's Office of Data Governance and Analysis (ODGA) in its mission to collect, analyze, and present data that enhances the quality and effectiveness of civil legal services provided by LSC's grantees. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams to conceptualize, design, and develop innovative, interactive visualizations, dashboards, analytical tools, and data storytelling experiences that turn complex information into accessible, actionable insights. Working closely with data engineers and researchers, you will ensure effective data processing and integration for data visualizations, while leading efforts to establish and uphold best practices in visualization design, accessibility, and user experience. This is a two-year grant-funded position with the possibility of extension contingent on the availability of funding.

Civil Court Data Initiative

Join us in revolutionizing the way civil legal issues are understood and addressed in the United States. LSC launched the Civil Court Data Initiative (CCDI) in 2019, creating an unparalleled repository of civil court data. With over 35 million records, collected from more than 30 states, this initiative empowers legal aid practitioners, researchers, and policy makers with critical data on eviction, data collection, domestic violence, adult guardianship, and other pressing civil legal matters.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Designs and develops interactive data visualizations, dashboards, and tools using industry-standard libraries (e.g., D3.js, Highcharts, Mapbox) and platforms (e.g., DataWrapper). Translates complex datasets into clear and engaging visuals that support data-driven storytelling.

2. Maintains and updates data-focused features on LSC websites. Improves performance and usability, and debugs data visualization issues as they arise.

3. Collaborates with data engineers to process data into formats optimized for visualization, and integrates data from APIs to create dynamic visualizations.

4. Engages with internal and external stakeholders to understand data needs and identify the most effective visualization approaches. Develops mockups, gathers feedback, and iteratively improves products.

5. Applies best practices in data visualization design, including appropriate chart types, accessibility, clear labeling, color choice, responsive layouts, and progressive disclosure techniques.

6. Coordinates with LSC's communications team to ensure that visual products align with branding and support communication goals.

7. Writes clean, modular, and maintainable code and documentation following best practices for visualization development.

COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:

Technical
  • 4+ years of web development experience, including 2+ years focused on data visualization.
  • Proficient in modern JavaScript frameworks (e.g., React or Vue) with willingness to learn others.
  • Strong background with web-based data visualization, best practices in data presentation, and user-centered design.
  • Experience using RESTful APIs and JSON files to create dynamic, data-driven web products.
  • Familiarity with Python or R for data processing.
  • Experience with web mapping tools such as Mapbox, including spatial data concepts and preparation.
  • Skilled in Git-based version control and development workflows.
  • Effective at communicating complex data and technical concepts to non-technical audiences.


ADDITIONAL PREFERENCES:
  • Experience processing and analyzing complex datasets.
  • Experience (or interest) in business intelligence tools and GIS.
  • Knowledge of best practices related to 508 compliance.

SALARY: $90,000
