One of the first human genetics departments in the country, the Department of Medical and Molecular Genetics at IU School of Medicine has a rich history of training geneticists and genetic counselors and providing genetic consultation and counseling services. Currently ranked 5th in the nation among Genetics Departments for NIH Funding, received in 2023, the department contributes to the understanding of numerous genetic conditions through the integration of basic research in genetic and genomic mechanisms, translational research in disease models, and clinical trials in rare and common genetic diseases.

The Database Developer serves as a key player in the Scalable Compute Archive (SCA) team at the Center for Computational Biology and Bioinformatics. The SCA, both a software suite and the team that manages it, builds, delivers, and operates customized web applications integrated with secure data management systems and scientific software application pipelines. The team partners with research groups taking on their data management to enable them to become better data stewards. The SCA offers many solutions in support of researchers, labs and centers at IU. Primarily, this involves custom web applications providing researchers with a simple, automated interfaces to complex cyberinfrastructure, be it IU's storage resources, the Scholarly Data Archive, IU's supercomputing clusters, or compute resources on our own hardware infrastructure. This allows researchers to focus on the science, rather than the technical hurdles inherent to such systems.

Job Summary
  • Provides advanced design, development, and implementation of databases with an emphasis on performance, security, and stability; determines technical feasibility and design solutions related to advanced hardware and software requirements; conducts and leads related planning, programming, data modeling, data flow diagramming, structural design, and testing.
  • Consults and provides advanced solutions for technical design and configuration of new or altered databases.
  • May contribute to committees and communities of practice to share and improve database development practices across the university; provides a high level of consultation and mentoring to other groups and staff on the use of database technologies and software.
  • Makes recommendations to improve, as well as implements, testing, quality assurance, and documentation protocols and procedures for database development projects and/or activities; fixes complex problems and resolves issues accordingly.
  • Develops formal and informal training approaches for newly acquired software and hardware tools.
  • Provides advanced-level research/analysis and stays up-to-date on new industry database development standards, approaches, and/or best practices; evaluates and makes recommendations to leadership for implementing new development practices.
  • May serve as project lead; often provides guidance to junior peers.

EDUCATION

Required
  • Bachelor's Degree preferably in computer science, information systems, or related field
Preferred
  • Master's degree in computer science, data science, information systems, or related field.
WORK EXPERIENCE

Required
  • 5 years of database planning, design, development or related experience.

Working Conditions / Demands

This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. Advertised Salary

$84,752.00 - $89,752.00 per year based on experience and internal equity within the department.
