Position Summary
The Dean of Students (DOS) at William James College is essential for enhancing student engagement, academic success, and retention in a supportive and inclusive environment. This role is for an experienced student affairs professional committed to the College's mission. The DOS develops and implements strategies to improve student life, focusing on advocacy, inclusion, and achievement while collaborating with key stakeholders, faculty, staff, students (both on campus and online), and alumni. Reporting directly to the Vice President of Academic Affairs, the DOS oversees all initiatives related to student affairs and addresses the diverse needs of the student body. The DOS also manages student life issues, including resolving complaints related to discrimination per Title IX regulations and WJC policies. As the Deputy Title IX Coordinator, the DOS maintains a safe learning environment and provides preventative education regarding misconduct and discrimination. The ideal candidate will have strong leadership skills, a commitment to Inclusive Excellence, and the ability to foster meaningful relationships in a vibrant campus environment. The DOS is expected to create innovative programs that promote a sense of belonging and student retention , while providing students with essential resources for academi, and professional success.

Essential Functions
Leadership and Administration
- Provide leadership for administrative units, student life, and community activities aligned with WJC's mission.
- Supervise the Academic Resource Center, manage crises, handle student complaints, and mediate disputes.
- Collaborate with Department Chairs and senior leadership to monitor student engagement, retention, and related budgets.
- Advise students in setting and achieving academic goals, also developing programs for success and community building.
- Manage and deliver required training for students using WJC's training software.
- Oversee new student orientation, and key community events and ensure the accuracy of website content.
- Assist in formulating college-wide policies for student services and maintain collaborative relationships across departments.
- Monitor student success metrics and report to senior leadership on retention and satisfaction.
- Perform additional duties as assigned
Student Experience and Engagement
- Lead student services, including advising, health, conduct, and managing complaints.
- Develop programs focused on student success, engagement, and personal development.
- Oversee student organizations and activities in collaboration with faculty and staff.
- Create partnerships with external organizations for enrichment, internships, and community engagement.
- Work with senior leaders to enhance strategies for inclusion and well-being throughout the student journey.
- Lead initiatives that demonstrate a strong commitment to cultural humility by actively creating a welcoming, respectful, and supportive environment for all members of the WJC community.
- Assess and develop campus communications, policies, and processes with a focus on Inclusive Excellence.
- Collaborate with the Inclusive Excellence committee to enhance education and student programming.
Retention and Student Success
- Design and implement strategies to enhance student retention and reduce attrition.
- Collaborate with various departments to create interventions for at-risk students.
- Lead initiatives to improve the first-year experience and support transfer students.
- Evaluate retention and graduation rates to inform the development of intervention strategies.
Title IX Deputy Responsibilities
- Act as the primary contact for Title IX student issues, overseeing the investigation and resolution of complaints.
- Develop education and prevention strategies for campus resources, policies, and reporting processes.
- Design training programs promoting inclusivity and manage annual student training.
- Maintain records of misconduct reports and investigations, supporting both complainants and respondents.
- Conduct climate surveys on trends in sexual misconduct and advise leadership on compliance.
- Collaborate with the Title IX Coordinator to enhance education and prevention efforts.
Education and Experience
- A Master's or Doctoral degree in higher education administration, educational leadership, or a related field (or equivalent)
- A minimum of 5 years of experience in a college or university setting.
- Proven success in a multicultural environment, demonstrating a strong understanding of diversity issues in student and workplace settings.
- Knowledge and experience in student leadership, government, Title IX compliance,sexual misconduct matters, and event and program planning.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, with strong interpersonal skills to build trust and demonstrate sensitivity and mutual respect.
- Ability to work collaboratively with students, staff, and faculty
- Proficiency in utilizing technology for delivering student programs.
- Comprehensive understanding of regulations and relevant legal frameworks, with the capacity to conduct sensitive investigations with empathy and neutrality.
- Strong analytical and decision-making skills to assess complex situations, along with experience in conflict resolution and mediation.
- Demonstrated leadership abilities and experience in managing a diverse team effectively.
