The primary purpose of this position is to provide dental treatment, education to patients and manage the Mobile Dental Unit. This position works under the direct supervision of the Dental Director. This position will supervise 3 employees in the dental program and coordinate all work activities with the program. The employee in this position will travel to schools in Rockingham County and work primarily with children.

The schedule for this position is typically 8am-3:30pm Monday - Thursday. (Occasional Fridays may be required)
Examples of Duties

The Dentist examines and determines dental needs, treatment plans, and provides restorative, surgical, preventive and emergency dental care for patients on the mobile unit. The Dentist in this position is responsible for developing and maintaining the dental program's quality assurance through continuous monitoring and assessment of appropriateness and quality of patient care.

Essential Functions
  • Provide comprehensive dental care, including diagnosis and treatment of dental diseases in school aged children, adolescents and occasionally adults.
  • Perform preventative, restorative, surgical and emergency dental procedures
  • Develop and implement individualized treatment plans
  • Educate and implement oral health hygiene
  • Develop and maintain the dental programs quality assurance through continuous monitoring and assessment of appropriateness and quality of patient care.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Comprehensive knowledge of County and Department policies and procedures; comprehensive knowledge of applicable local and State laws, rules and regulations; thorough knowledge of the equipment, instruments, practices and procedures utilized in a general dentistry practice; thorough knowledge in preparing reports and other types of correspondence; thorough knowledge in the use of standard office equipment and associated software (e.g. Avatar, NC Tracks); ability to communicate effectively in oral and written form; ability to compute rates, ratios and percentages; ability to maintain effective working relationships medical officials, patients, and associates.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an approved school of dentistry and 1-2 years of direct experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Valid driver's license.

NECESSARY SPECIAL QUALIFICATION:
Licensed to practice dentistry in North Carolina.

Physical Requirements

This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 10 pounds of force; work regularly requires repetitive motions, frequently requires speaking or hearing and reaching with hands and arms and occasionally requires standing, walking, sitting, using hands to finger, handle or feel, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, pushing or pulling and lifting; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arm's length, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work occasionally requires working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to the risk of electrical shock, working with explosives, exposure to vibration, exposure to blood borne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment and N95 Mask; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).

Note: In accordance with State mandates and the Rockingham County Emergency Operations Plan, Rockingham County Health and Human Services staff from the Divisions of Social Services, Public Health and Integrated Health are required to staff emergency shelters during times of disaster. Medical, Dental, and Vision Insurance

For Full Time employees in a regular position, insurance is available and effective the first day of the following month after having worked for an entire month. The County currently pays 100% of the cost for regular employees working at least 30 hours per week. Dependent coverage is also available.

Local Government Retirement System

All employees in regular full or part time position are required to contribute to the retirement system. Contributions are taken on a pre-tax basis. The current contribution amount is 6%.
