Position Responsibilities

Position Summary

The University of Idaho College of Engineering invites applications for the position of Chair and Associate or Full Professor of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. The administrative portion of this position is described below in the Administrative Summary.

The successful candidate will have a baccalaureate degree and an earned doctorate in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a closely related field. Candidates for this position must meet the College and department promotion and tenure requirements for the rank of Associate or Full Professor with tenure.

This position requires a strong commitment to department leadership, teaching, and research. The Chair is responsible for guiding the faculty and staff in understanding and aligning with the university and college's goals. Through effective leadership, the Chair ensures active participation in shaping and implementing the department's initiatives.
Candidates will be expected to teach courses in their area of expertise, mentor graduate students, and participate in the research mission of the university.

Up to four weeks of summer salary will be available, to be negotiated annually with the dean.

Administrative Summary

Salary commensurate on experience + 15% administrative stipend. Up to four weeks of summer salary to be negotiated with the dean annually.

The general responsibilities for the Chair include:
  • Promoting effective leadership of personnel and management of departmental resources.
  • Providing leadership in the development and implementation of department plans and policies.
  • Fostering and supporting open communication with faculty and staff.
  • Fostering excellence in teaching, scholarship, service and outreach for faculty, students, and staff in the department.
  • Assisting higher administration in the assignment and in the evaluation of the services of each member of the department's faculty and staff.
  • Participating in the university and department assessment and accreditation processes
  • Effectively representing all constituents of the department.
  • Serving as part of the college's leadership team and striving for the success of the college
  • Continuing personal professional development in areas of leadership.
  • Leading department efforts for recruitment and retention of students.


Contingency Description

This administrative appointment or the administrative portion of the faculty appointment is temporary. Employee acknowledges and agrees that in the event there is no longer a need for the administrative assignment, as determined by University in its sole discretion, University may change this Agreement and remove the administrative salary and/or course release during the contract year and employee may return to their faculty appointment, upon 60 days written notice

Qualifications

Minimum Education/Degree Required
Listed degree qualification is required at time of application.

Required Qualifications
  • Baccalaureate degree and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a closely related field
  • Meet the College and department promotion and tenure requirements for the rank of Associate or Full Professor with tenure.
  • Experience in teaching, research, service, outreach, and leadership.
  • Experience in developing curriculum.
  • Experience in mentoring faculty, staff and students.
  • Hold a Professional Engineer License or become licensed in Idaho within 5 years of hire.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Tenured with the rank of Full Professor at current institution.
  • Have excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Extensive experience in teamwork and effectively leading interdisciplinary groups.
  • Experience with assessment and program accreditation.
  • Passion for cultivating shared vision/mission surrounding departmental activities and initiatives.
