Position Highlights

The Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology at the University of Arizona R Ken Coit College of Pharmacy is seeking candidates for the position of Department Head. This department is currently comprised of 29 faculty members, 39 staff, and 21 Postdoctoral Scholars. The selected candidate will lead and oversee all academic, research, and administrative functions within the department.

This position offers the opportunity for professional growth and advancement, with potential to shape the direction of the department as growth continues in both the Tucson and Phoenix campuses. The successful candidate will have access to a dynamic environment and contribute to the advancement and growth of the department in a college that is one of the premier pharmacy schools (ranked No. 4 by American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy) in the nation with an emphasis on research and scholarship.

The Department Head should be an accomplished scholar and teacher, demonstrating vision, leadership, managerial and mentoring abilities, strong interpersonal skills, strength in collaboration and team building, and skills in developing policies, procedures, and strategic planning. Candidates must be eligible for "full professor with tenure" ranking at time of hire.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Provide leadership and vision for the department, aligning with the College's and University's strategic goals
  • Supervise the teaching responsibilities over department faculty to ensure equity of the academic program and balance workload across the department
  • Identifies and promotes interdisciplinary research and scholarly activity (participates in teaching and research activities) within the College and with external partners
  • Promotes the development of education and training programs including experiential education and post-graduate training opportunities
  • Conduct annual evaluations of department faculty and staff in coordination with university guidelines
  • Make recommendations pertaining to salary adjustments and personnel actions to the Dean
  • Mentor and support faculty in their professional development, research endeavors, and teaching activities
  • Develops and facilitates faculty recruitment and promotion/tenure plans
  • Foster a collaborative environment that promotes excellence in teaching, research, and service
  • Attends yearly events celebrating student milestones (e.g. graduation, convocation, and other events as needed)
  • Represent the department in College and University committees and at professional organizations and conferences


Minimum Qualifications
  • PhD or Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) or equivalent degree in a pharmacy related discipline (pharmacy education background preferred)
  • Demonstrated administrative experience and skills with eligibility for the title of full professor
  • A strong record of service, teaching, and scholastic excellence with continued productivity
  • A track record of extramural support and an internationally recognized research program
