Job Description
POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the direct supervision of the Director of Pharmacy, the Associate Director of Pharmacy is responsible for providing support to the management staff in overseeing the daily clinical and operational needs of the pharmacy department. This includes administrative, managerial, and operational tasks aimed at ensuring smooth, efficient, and effective delivery of pharmacy services. The role also includes implementing and overseeing various quality improvement (QIC) programs and initiatives within the department, ensuring continuous improvement in service delivery and patient care.
ORGANIZATIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provides assistance to senior pharmacy management in a wide range of activities in the management of a correctional facility such areas as hospital administration, total management and administrative systems, professional, medical, technical, operational and related support activity services. Helps with logistics, communication, documentation, and coordination tasks to ensure that the P&T Committee functions efficiently and effectively. They often act as a liaison between committee members, the pharmacy department, and other healthcare professionals, ensuring that all aspects of P&T committee operations are well-organized Investigates and reports on patient complaints and performs special studies and performs special studies and investigations on operational units. Coordinate the implementation of new pharmacy programs and initiatives that improve patient care, medication safety, and pharmacy operations. Attends staff meetings, inter-departmental conferences and represents the Director, as well as the departmental administrators at inter-departmental functions and programs Assists in the planning, development, evaluation and problem solving of data collection and analysis. Prepares check requests and purchase orders for the department. Maintains internal department tracking system to assure receipt. Prepares form for monitoring usage of pharmacy management CE time. Manages the implementation of PYXIS Medstation to ensure the appropriate utilization of automation and information technology. Manages the integration and maintenance of automation and technology to assure safe and appropriate use of medications. Manages the processes that identifies and resolves problems related to pharmacy automation and technology. Supervise the activities of the PYXIS equipment, and personnel assuring compliance with protocols. Provide guidance to Assistant Directors of Pharmacy in meeting departmental objectives. Helps prepare and distribute the P&T meeting agenda in advance, ensuring that all relevant topics, including drug reviews, formulary updates, and medication safety concerns, are included for discussion. Identifies areas to improve workflow efficiency and optimize medication distribution, improving both patient care and the overall pharmacy team's productivity. Regularly reviews policies related to pharmaceutical practices and suggests updates in response to new regulations, guidelines, or improvements in best practices. Support in the management of pharmacy resources, including ordering supplies, and optimizing staff scheduling to meet the needs of patients and the pharmacy team. Address personnel issues or operational challenges as they arise, resolving conflicts or performance concerns and escalating as necessary. Schedule interviews and arranges clearances with DOC for outside visitors. Performs other duties as assigned. Assumes system-wide (Rikers and borough houses) responsibility for all pharmacy operations for the week when on-call during evenings, weekends and holidays.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor's degree required. Masters Degree preferred. Computer experience in a Windows environment including Microsoft Word, Access, and Excel. Demonstrated administrative skills (decision-making/problem solving abilities, priority setting, good communication skills and interpersonal skills).
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Office area located in a jail setting but may be required to go to various facilities to obtain information. Frequent walking (sometimes long distances), sitting, standing, reaching and bending. Travel between all facilities on Rikers Island is required. Temperature control and ventilation is highly variable throughout the jail campus.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Principally classified as medium duty work with frequent travel/walking between facilities. May be required to help push and/or pull carts weighing up to 300 lbs down long hallways and lift up to 35 pounds on occasion.
Minimum Qualifications
1. Valid license and current registration to practice as a Pharmacist issued by the New York State Department of Education (NYSED); and
2. Four (4) years of satisfactory full-time experience as a licensed practicing Pharmacist, of which at least two (2) years shall have been in an administrative, managerial or supervisory capacity in a Pharmacy in a hospital, health or medical facility.
