Job Description

The Deputy Director of Laboratory Services assists the Director of Laboratory Administration in overseeing daily operations, ensures that an effective management system provides quality laboratory services, regulatory compliance, and efficient workflow within the laboratory. This role involves supervising staff, maintaining laboratory standards, troubleshooting technical issues, and stepping in as Acting Administrator when required. The Deputy Director assures regulatory compliance and efficient workflows in the laboratory.

AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

All laboratory Sections of the Pathology Department

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Laboratory Operations & Quality Assurance
  • Assist in managing laboratory workflow and ensuring timely test results.
  • Implement and oversee the Quality Management program.
  • Oversee and maintain document control.
  • Monitor equipment maintenance, calibration, and troubleshooting to minimize downtime.
  • Ensure compliance with safety, hygiene, and biosafety protocols.
  • Implement and maintain quality control procedures to meet industry and regulatory standards.

2. Staff Supervision & Training
  • Supervise and support laboratory staff, including technologists, technicians, and assistants.
  • Provide training and mentorship to new and existing staff.
  • Assist with performance evaluations and staff scheduling.
  • Address technical and operational issues raised by team members.

3. Compliance & Regulatory Adherence
  • Ensure laboratory practices comply with national and international regulatory guidelines.
  • Assist in audits, inspections, and accreditation processes.
  • Oversee the maintenance of documentation for quality assurance and compliance purposes.
  • Perform internal inspections and participates in external regulatory audits and inspections. Ensure the implementation and effectiveness of corrective action plans.

4. Technical & Analytical Support
  • Assist in troubleshooting complex test results and laboratory procedures.
  • Provide expert guidance on specimen handling and testing methodologies.
  • Stay updated with advancements in laboratory technology and recommend improvements.

5. Administrative & Managerial Duties
  • Support the Laboratory Section Managers in budget planning, procurement, and inventory control.
  • Assist in implementing new policies and procedures to improve efficiency.
  • Act as the Laboratory Section Managers in their absence, making critical operational decisions.
  • Manage emergency preparedness processes to ensure adequacy in staffing and supplies, and the continuity of laboratory operations.


Minimum Qualifications
1. Licensed by New York State Education Department (NYSED) as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist, and
2. Master's degree from an accredited college or university in Business Administration, Engineering, Health Care Specialization, Physical or Social Sciences or a related discipline; and five (5) years of progressively responsible administrative, managerial and/or consultative experience; or
3. Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in disciplines, as listed in "1" above; and six (6) years of progressively responsible administrative, managerial and/or consultative experience; or
4. Satisfactory equivalent combination of training, education and/or experience. However, all candidates must have a minimum of a Bachelor's degree in disciplines, as listed in "1" above.
