The Language and Culture Division at the New Mexico Public Education Department serves as the lead for language, culture, and equity within the following areas: State-Funded Bilingual Multicultural Education Programs, Culturally and Linguistically Responsive Instruction, English Learner students, Migrant Education Programs, the State Seal of Bilingualism-Biliteracy, Title III English Language Acquisition, Language Enhancement, and Academic Achievement, as well as World Language Instruction.
Why does the job exist?
This position is responsible for providing timely and relevant customer service, technical assistance, and accountability with support to districts across the state implementing language, culture and equity programing. The Deputy Director also supports with the selection, onboarding, mentoring and evaluation of Division staff. The Language and Culture Division is committed to supporting districts and charter schools as they develop, implement and sustain effective language programs which provide culturally and linguistically responsive, rigorous instruction for all students.
How does it get done?
Collaborate with the Language and Culture Division Director, and other division, bureau and agency staff, which includes but is not limited to: Providing timely and relevant customer service, technical assistance, and support to districts and charter schools across the state; providing instructional leadership, specific and meaningful feedback, and informational resources to districts and schools in the focus areas; assisting the Division with data analysis, program evaluation and monitoring via desktop auditing, and on-site visits which require travel across the state.

Secretary of Education, Deputy Cabinet Secretaries, District Administrators of Bilingual Multicultural Education, World Language, EL, Title III, and Title I Part C, School Administrators, Teachers, and Students and Families.
Ideal Candidate
Ideal candidate has knowledge or experience in managing and mentoring staff, as well as the implementation of world language, English learner, or bilingual multicultural education programs; second language acquisition teaching and learning, project management and strategic planning.
Minimum Qualification
Bachelor's degree in Education, Public Administration, or Business Administration and five (5) years of experience as a teacher and/or program administrator. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling nine (9) years may substitute for the required education and experience.

Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver's License.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Some sitting, standing, bending and reaching may be required.
