POSITION SUMMARY
The Deputy Director, Publications, is responsible for coordinating with the Editorial, Production, Marketing, and Communications teams for the publication of digital content (websites and apps) of the Blood journals portfolio, Hematology Education Program, annual meeting abstracts, ASH Image Bank, and ASH SAP; serves as the key liaison with the online platform vendors; monitors how content is positioned on market-leading tracking websites such as Altmetrics and Web of Science; overseas publication of audio content such as the Blood Podcast; tracks overall performance of digital content; updates department leadership on key budget items; and stays current about publishing trends. The Deputy Director, Publications, ensures the effective management of marketing activities for the department including author- and member-focused marketing for the Blood Journals, ASH SAP, The Hematology Education Program. and ASH Image Bank; overseas the creation and distribution of key email alerts such as This Week in Blood and Advance Notice; and monitors online ad placements on websites. The position is very collaborative requiring the ability to work effectively with various departments and vendors to meet organizational and department goals.

PHYSICAL REQUREMENTS
ASH has a hybrid work environment, with core in-office days for all ASH staff on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, and telework on Mondays and Fridays for eligible positions. The Society's headquarters is in Washington, DC, and is within walking distance of several Metro stations on the Blue/Orange/Silver and Red lines.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Digital publication and enhancements to publications
- Assist the with planning and implementation of digital enhancements to the Blood journals, Hematology Education Program, meeting abstracts, ASH Image Bank, ASH SAP, ASH Clinical News, and other publications.
- Works with ASH to ensure and improve integration of Publications portfolio content on the ASH website.
- Orchestrate production of digital assets, provide recommendations for development of such assets, and oversees their implementation.
- Coordinating the creation and publication of audio content at the article level.
- Coordinating the creation and distribution of key email alerts such as This Week in Blood and Advance Notice.
- Coordinating the creation and publication of educational multi-media elements.
- Key liaison for online and app vendors.
- Interface with the online platform vendors to plan and implement changes/enhancements
- Work with tracking tools such as Google Analytics to report online usage and site performance
- Reports system-related problems to ASH and to vendors, as appropriate.
- Provides tracking results of the online advertisements.
- Stay current and report on the latest digital developments and products for STM journals.
- Stay current with AI integration in STM publishing.
Data analysis and reporting
- Helps evaluate comparative performance of Blood journals, Hematology Education Program, ASH SAP, and other publications.
- Monitors how content is positioned on market-leading tracking websites.
Publications Marketing
- Supervises the Senior Manager, Blood Portfolio Marketing for journal-related marketing activities.
- Supports campaigns for ASH-SAP, Hematology Education Program, and other scientific publications such as compendiums to meet revenue and outreach goals.
- Works with various departments to identify and implement cross-promotional opportunities for marketing Blood journals, ASH membership, and other Society products and services.
- Analyzes web site visitors, pay-per-view, and other digital content usage data to develop and implement marketing strategies.
- Develops and implements survey tools to assess user satisfaction with print and online publication features.
- Attends relevant publisher and industry meetings to keep abreast of market and industry trends.
Financial Management Support
- Reviews monthly financial statements.
- Monitors budget and reports to department leadership.
- Helps develop budget for out-years and budget planning purposes.
Management & Supervision
- Manages Publications Digital and Marketing teams
- Trains staff to either serve as a back-up or primary function in assigned digital production tasks that are described above.
- Motivates staff and monitors performance to ensure the productivity of the staff.
- Carries-out performance evaluations in a timely fashion.
Other Duties
- Facilitates new technology-related projects to enhance the overall publications performance.
- Stays abreast of technical developments and advances in online peer review systems and new developments in scholarly publishing.
QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE SKILL REQUIRED
- Bachelor's degree in science or humanities, preferably with background in statistics; advanced degree preferred.
- Minimum of seven years providing technical support or management in a digital-driven publication environment with experience in digital production. Practical knowledge of Web technology tools and development of online site features strongly preferred; experience in working with a Web-based peer-review system strongly preferred.
- Expert-level practical knowledge of office software, especially Excel. In-depth understanding of online/Web journal-hosting platforms.
- Proven attention to detail; ability to work under tight deadlines; excellent organizational skills; strong project management skills.
- Excellent oral and written communications skills.
- Ability to communicate effectively and work constructively with scientific/medical researchers, editors, authors, and reviewers.
- Prior supervisory experience strongly preferred.
