Job Description
PURPOSE OF POSITION
Under direction of the Director of Respiratory Care (DRC), performs and manages a diverse range of responsibilities focused on assisting in the oversight of all aspects of the Respiratory Care Department activities across the health care setting. Assists in leading the respiratory therapy services, focusing on clinical education, quality assurance, and staff development. Responsible for upholding the highest standards of patient care, leverages advancements in respiratory therapy and providing leadership in the DRC's absence.
AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITIES
Respiratory Therapy Department: Bedside healthcare service and pulmonary function testing (PFT) at both the lab and clinic
SUMMARY OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Works collaboratively with the DRC to develop and implement comprehensive clinical education programs for respiratory therapy staff, focusing on enhancing clinical skills and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards. Creates and maintains all respiratory therapy competency training, in accordance with federal, state, local regulations, and The Joint Commission standards.
2. Assists with overseeing quality assurance protocols to maintain and enhance the standards of respiratory therapy services. Conducts regular audits and assessments to identify areas for improvement and implements corrective actions, as necessary.
3. Collaborates with interdisciplinary teams to ensure that evidence-based practices are implemented and regulatory standards are met, and offers consultative services to medical and nursing staff.
4. Participates in designing and conducting training programs focusing on the latest advancements in respiratory therapy. Provides mentor-ship and guidance to staff members, enhancing their professional growth and development and fosters a collaborative and supportive work environment that encourages continuous learning and improvement.
5. Stays informed on the latest global trends and best practices, anticipating emerging issues and evaluating and integrating innovative methodologies and technologies into the Respiratory Care Department; attends conferences, workshops, and other professional development events.
6. Assists with day-to-day oversight of the Respiratory Care Department and maintains legal and accreditation compliance by developing policy positions to anticipate emerging issues.
7. Ensures that the Respiratory Care Department adheres to all policies, procedures, protocols, and guidelines through regular staff in-service and competency assessments.
8. Maintains inventory of all equipment and supplies, establishes equipment maintenance schedules and evaluates new equipment. Participates in the selection of new equipment to ensure that the department's equipment needs are met.
9. Enforces infection control and patient safety procedures, completes staff competencies, assists with annual evaluations.
10. Participates in new hire interviewing and selection process, and collaborates on the development and administration of staff training programs. May serve as a liaison with Respiratory Care schools to develops ongoing applicant pools.
11. Participates in labor relations activities and conducts counseling and disciplinary sessions, in collaboration with the DRC.
12. Performs other related duties, as directed.
Minimum Qualifications
1. Valid license and current registration to practice as Respiratory Therapist issued by the New York State
Education Department (NYSED); and
2. Holds or obtains a valid and current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart
Association (AHA) within sixty (60) calendar days of appointment to the title; and
3. Master's degree from an accredited college or university in Respiratory Therapy, Public Health or a
related discipline; and three (3) years of satisfactory Respiratory Care Department experience in a
hospital or health care setting, one (1) year of which must have been in a responsible administrative or
managerial capacity; or
4. Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university, in disciplines, as listed in "3" above; and five
(5) years of experience, as indicated in "3" above, one (1) year of which must have been in a responsible
administrative or managerial capacity.
5. A satisfactory equivalent of education, training, and experience. However, all candidates must have a
minimum of a Bachelor's degree in disciplines, as described in "3" above, and be licensed and currently
registered by the NYSED to practice as a Respiratory Therapist in New York State.
