The AFRL Materials and Manufacturing Directorate seeks to hire a motivated and experienced technical leader to serve as the Manufacturing, Industrial Technologies, and Energy Division Deputy Chief. This position will be filled at the DR-4 (GS-15 equivalent) level and is located at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio. DR-3 (GS-14 equivalent) candidates with one year of applicable/relevant experience will be considered. This position may be filled as a 5-year Flexible Length Renewable Technical Term Appointment (current government term employees, etc.) with the option to later extend or convert to a permanent appointment.

Position duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Supervises professional engineering and scientific work to develop, maintain, and apply manufacturing and energy technology solutions to meet mechanical, electrical, environmental, and chemical requirements
  • Manages the operations and business practices of the division
  • Serves as the division representative to the AFRL/RX Management Group and Capital Assets Board
  • Division focal point for resource allocation and management
  • Provides oversight of program execution
  • Leads internal and external teams to establish new S&T technical goals and approaches

Required Qualifications

  • US Citizenship
  • Possess a professional science or engineering (S&E) degree, in a relevant technical field, from an accredited (or ABET accredited for engineering) academic institution
  • Possess and maintain a Secret security clearance
  • Applicants must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience at the next lower grade or equivalent in other pay systems

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience as a government supervisor and/or team leader managing a diverse group of employees (various labor series, academic degrees, and job skill certifications), including creating an effective culture for innovation
  • Strong interpersonal skills to engage with research personnel, program managers and senior leaders
  • Demonstrated ability to lead people, build consensus, and identify and resolve conflicts/problems with the workforce
  • Strong project/program management skills with experience of tracking and managing cost, schedule, and technical performance of research and development efforts
  • Strong planning, budgeting, development, and execution of research, exploratory development, advanced development and technology transition efforts
  • Experience working with or within the Department of Defense research and acquisition communities
  • Experience working with or within joint working groups
  • Master's degree or higher preferred
