What You Will Do
Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is seeking a talented and driven engineer to join us in our Engineering Services - Weapons Project Delivery (ES-WPD) group as a Deputy Group Leader (DGL). Our Project Delivery groups develop, maintain, and apply a diverse set of engineering capabilities to provide innovative engineering solutions that enable the Laboratory's scientific and national security mission. This position is within the Engineering Services Division Office (ES-DO) and will be responsible for implementing the Conduct of Engineering (COE) program at Los Alamos National Laboratory in support of installation or modifications to systems, structures and components, as well as new installations. This position supports nuclear, accelerator, high explosives, or non-nuclear facilities at the Weapons Facilities Operations (WFO) Facilities Operations Directorate (FOD).
As the DGL for ES-WPD you will lead a portfolio of project work that is developed by a team of project engineers, design engineers, field engineers, design managers, and project controllers, and will assist the Group Leader (GL) in management responsibilities. You will assure technical aspects of all projects in your portfolio meet the requirements of the COE program across the entire project lifecycle and promote successful outcomes in project execution. As an integral part of the ES-PD groups, you will need a strong ability to lead others, solve problems both technical and human, and develop successful Integrated Project Teams (IPT) with customers, stakeholders, subject matter experts and others. You will also play a part in the development and administration of budgets, schedules, and performance standards for the organizational unit.

Leadership & Management
The ideal candidate will have prior experience managing technical teams and interfacing with other engineering disciplines. You will work directly with the Group Lead in a management council, guiding, developing, planning, and executing work the Group performs. You will articipate in forecasting staffing requirements, developing, and managing budgets, monitoring performance, developing metrics, and initiating personnel actions when necessary. As DGL you will develop direct relationships with customers assessing team performance, future work, and development of new work with new customers and funding.
All aspects of personnel management will be your responsibility, including employee hiring and on-boarding processes, providing continuous performance management and feedback to further develop staff including annual performance discussions, identification of growth opportunities and ensuring proper team recognition and appreciation.
Knowledge & Experience
As a skilled engineer, you will provide nuclear and non-nuclear engineering services to ensure facilities are designed, constructed, modified, and maintained to satisfy customer needs and expectations in a cost effective, safe, and compliant manner. You will be an active participant in project planning prior to proposals, develops proposals, and provides effective project management when needed. You will assist the Group Leader in developing specific short-term and long-range plans and monitor progress to assure long-term objectives are attained and customer requirements are met. You will lead and oversee process improvement efforts to address procedural, policies, and work process changes, and actively seek opportunities to enhance effectiveness and efficiencies of policies and procedures in effect at LANL.
Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution and 10 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Desired Qualifications:
Work Location: The work location for this position is hybrid and is located in Los Alamos, NM. Hybrid is defined as working partially onsite/partially offsite but within 2 hours ground commute of this location. All work locations are at the discretion of management and can change at any time with appropriate notice.
Position Commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

- Registered Engineer in Training (EIT) or licensed Professional Engineer (PE)
- Project and/or engineering technical management and leadership training and coursework
- Knowledge of applicable codes and standards in common use at DOE and DOD facilities (ASME, NQA-1, IBC, IEBC, IEEE, NFPA, etc)
- Demonstrated experience using and interpreting industry, regulatory, or Department of Energy/National Nuclear Security Administration (DOE/NNSA) codes, standards, and criteria pertinent to the construction discipline
- Knowledge of DOE and LANL Engineering Standards and Conduct of Engineering
- Advanced engineering or technical degree is highly desired
