The Minority Fellowship Program (MFP) at the American Nurses Association (ANA) grew as a response to the lack of mental health and substance abuse nurse professionals who could provide culturally competent care to an increasingly diverse population with ever-expanding needs for mental health and substance abuse disorders services, research, advocacy, and policy development.
Through the MFP, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) provides federal grants to increase the number of PhD prepared nurses, psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, and marriage and family therapists from underrepresented ethnic minority groups who will:

- Conduct research about substance abuse and mental health disorders prevention and treatment within minority populations, across all age groups and in a variety of settings.
- Assume leadership roles in the initiation of scientific investigations and service utilization phenomena that occur among ethnic minority populations.
- Expand and contribute to the evidence-based practice of substance abuse and mental health disorders prevention and treatment among ethnic minority populations throughout the lifespan; and
- Function as leaders and members of interdisciplinary research, public health policy, and direct-service care teams with the objective of improving the overall health status of ethnic minority populations.

What you will do:
- Partners with the Project Director on all components across programming, to include developing a pathways program that provides outreach, education and raises awareness of behavioral health employment and career opportunities and training pathways for high school, community college, vocational/technical trade school students who desire to provide services to individuals from communities of color. Additionally, the deputy project director will develop a partnership with elementary and high school districts to develop a workforce pipeline to attract adolescents, youth, and high school students into pursuing behavioral health nursing careers.
- Contributes to the visibility of the MFP by participating in the ANA leadership and other organizational meetings and other public settings as appropriate and brings ideas and information back from these events to the team to increase the MFP's effectiveness and impact in the larger nursing community.
- Serves as the secondary liaison to the National Advisory Committee through oversight,
- Scheduling quarterly meetings, developing agendas, meeting summaries, and following up on action items.
- Shares in knowledge dissemination around specific psychiatric mental health and substance use nursing and emerging practice areas, to include developing the alumni biographical portfolio at www.emfp.org to help facilitate requests from organizations pursuing mental health and substance use subject matter experts from historically marginalized communities.
- Identifies best practices to improve internal systems with an eye toward future needs and budget realities to include seeking out additional sources of funding and/or sponsorships that help to augment the SAMHSA MFP funding.
What you bring to ANA:
Education:
- Bachelor's degree required. Bachelor's degree in nursing (BSN) preferred, but not required.
Related Work Experience:
- 3-5 years of Federal grant funding and knowledge of the grant development process preferred.
Preferred Skills and Experience:
- Strong written, verbal, and presentation skills and the ability to translate data into clear and simple messages for a wide range of audiences.
- Ability to work as part of a team, both as a leader and in a supporting capacity, to expand the visibility of the MFP.
- Passionate about providing a long-term, innovative vision while simultaneously creating pragmatic solutions to the day-to-day challenges.
- Experience managing cross-functional teams to develop and implement systems and processes to increase effectiveness and efficiency.
- High degree of integrity and dependability, with a strong attention to detail.
- Ability to manage time, deliverables and meet deadlines.
- Demonstrated ability to recognize and appreciate cultural and gender differences and adhere to ANA Code of Conduct Policy.
