Capital B is a first-of-its-kind local and national nonprofit news organization reporting for Black communities across the country. We have local newsrooms in Atlanta and Gary, Ind. as well as a national newsroom. Cofounded by CEO Lauren Williams (former senior vice president and editor-in-chief of Vox) and Chief Audience Officer Akoto Ofori-Atta (former managing editor of The Trace), Capital B is looking for a highly motivated development officer to help us prospect new philanthropic opportunities with foundations and individuals, move opportunities through the pipeline process, steward existing relationships, and help our team stay on track in order to achieve our goals.
Our development team's work allows us to pursue ambitious, essential journalism for Black communities, expand into new communities that lack robust local news, and build a sustainable business for the future. Over the next three years, Capital B has ambitious plans for how we will expand, serve our communities, and deliver journalism that helps materially improve the lives of those we reach.
The development officer will work across the breadth of our development team including individual donors, corporate philanthropies, and institutions providing in-depth research and prospecting, spearheading grant proposals, moves management, and stewardship. They will be responsible for helping to craft and execute plans that help the team achieve their overall fundraising goals, and serve as the internal linchpin of the development team.
The ideal candidate thrives in an entrepreneurial environment, is highly organized and communicative, results-driven, and experienced in the multiple facets of development work. They should be excited by the opportunity to have their hands in multiple arms of fundraising and feel comfortable interfacing with high net worth individuals, high ranking officers, and executives.
This position currently reports to the Chief Revenue Officer and will work collaboratively with the rest of the development team, executive team, and newsroom to help achieve our overall revenue goals.

Requirements
Responsibilities:
- Help to identify and maintain a pipeline of 100+ institutional donors (including our 30+ existing) who, by and large, have capacity for six figure giving and have philanthropic goals and interests that align with Capital B's work and mission.
- Successfully manage and push existing and prospective donors through the funnel to achieve annual goals.
- Lead the full philanthropic cycle including: identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitations, and stewardship, including the development of new materials and strategies as needed.
- Provide deep prospect research on individuals who are aligned with Capital B's mission and values and are capable of making five to seven figure gifts
- Provide detailed and meticulous preparation materials go Capital B executives in order to prepare them for meetings with prospective and existing funders in order to achieve stated goals
- Oversee meetings and engagement between grant makers, Capital B executives and Capital B affiliates.
- Manage stewardship of funders in collaboration with the development team and broader Capital B personnel, helping to promote a culture of philanthropy.
- Propose and execute on giving and cultivation activities throughout the course of the year.
- Lead the development, writing, and delivery of annual impact report for funders.
- Utilize expertise and collected information to prep Capital B executives for successful closing meetings
- Stay up-to-date on trends in philanthropic giving and media in order to come up with creative strategies and new ideas that will allow us to reach our fundraising goals.
What You'll Bring:
- 5+ years of experience in development work with foundations and grants.
- Strong attention to detail and excellent organizational and time management skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to write and edit compelling donor communications and to appropriately represent Capital B in compelling in-person and virtual pitches.
- Strong analytical skills and experience with prospect research.
- A track record of achieving fundraising goals and delivering results
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to interact with grant makers, foundation staff, journalists, board members and others.
- Experience with journalism organizations preferred not required
