JOB SUMMARY:
The Director ensures the effective operation of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) office and the efficient and compliant functioning of the Animal Welfare Program at Wake Forest University School of Medicine. This role requires close collaboration with the IACUC Chairs, Vice Chairs, the Attending Veterinarian and Institutional Official to facilitate the smooth functioning of review, approval, and oversight activities. The Director oversees internal inspections of vivaria and laboratories and takes part in site visits from external oversight agencies such as the USDA, NIH, DOD, and AAALAC. Responsibilities include preparing for these visits, responding to inquiries, and ensuring compliance with all relevant regulations, state statutes and institutional policies and procedures governing animal research. The Director will oversee protocols covering a diverse range of animal species.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: Bachelor's degree in a relevant field; advanced degree preferred.
REPORTS TO: Associate Vice President and Assistant Dean, Research Oversight and Support / IO for Animal Research
LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION, and/or REGISTRATION: Certified Professional in IACUC Administration (CPIA) preferred.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Maintains awareness of regulations and changes in existing regulations related to animal research and interprets these requirements to ensure compliant operations. Develops and implements policies and procedures that comply with all federal, state and local requirements related to animal research, in conjunction with the IACUC Chairs, Institutional Official and Attending Veterinarian. Ensures communication among stakeholders: Faculty, IACUC, Conflict of Interest Office, Office of Sponsored Programs, and the Animal Resources Program (ARP). Evaluates IACUC organizational functions and structures to determine the best allocation and utilization of resources. Provides training and support to researchers, ensuring they understand and comply with IACUC protocols and procedures. Works closely with veterinarians, researchers, and other stakeholders to ensure the welfare of all animals. Communicates effectively about sensitive topics, including animal welfare and compliance with regulations. Provides key input regarding security, outreach, and communication about the animal care and use program. Seeks to establish a regional and national reputation for excellence. Oversees the maintenance of accurate records of all IACUC activities, including protocol reviews, inspections, and training sessions.

- Bachelor's degree in a relevant field; advanced degree preferred.
- Minimum of 7 years of direct animal welfare or IACUC leadership experience. Supervisory experience required.
- Expert knowledge and experience with the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) process, including an appreciation of the ethical implications of animal research and an intimate understanding of governmental regulations pertaining to animal care and use.
- Strong planning, problem-solving and change management skills.
- Demonstrated skill in personal diplomacy with ability to handle sensitive communications with leadership, researchers, management, legal counsel, and regulatory agencies.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- Office environment with occasional travel to research sites and facilities.
