Description of Position
The Director reports to the Associate Dean of Career and Technical Education and is directly responsible for the oversight and administration of all aspects of the Aerospace Science Program including Airplane Operations, ATC, and Technical Aviation. The Director will represent the Aviation Department as a member of the college's leadership staff and will work cooperatively with others within the college and community to achieve successful outcomes. The Director maintains effective communication with flight contractors and ensures 85/15 VA compliance in conjunction with the Associate Dean of CTE and Student Services personnel. The Director will assist in the preparation of the Aviation Department budget, pursue new financial resources in support of the department and guide the recruitment, appointment, retention, and long-term success of its adjunct faculty, staff and students. The Director monitors flight partners with efficient flight scheduling and training, and deals with FAA paperwork and communications pertaining to FAA part 141 regulations or FAA part 61 regulations. The Director actively seeks partnerships with commercial airlines for student placement.
Additional duties will be assigned as follows:
Maintain ATC and flight simulation laboratories and associated software contracts utilizing consultants, student workers, faculty, and IT personnel.
Teach up to 6 load hours per semester in either UAS or Flight. May include ground schools, FOI, or specific flight classes as needed.
Promote the program through outreach efforts, community involvement, and marketing and recruitment activities.
Primary interface between the college and flight contractors including setting expectations relating to YC policies and procedures, conveying YC standards, ensuring accreditation rules are adhered to and that all YC policies are strictly enforced, and ensuring that students have adequate training in a timely manner each semester.
Perform program assessments, completes annual reports, program reviews and other administrative duties related to these programs.
Recommend implementation of additional courses for the academic program as needed, as well as any program or course outcome changes as needed. Direct the planning, writing, implementation and evaluation of curriculum/courses for the current academic program. Supervise the preparation of catalog material for the academic program. Adhere to and monitor program accreditation requirements and standards.
Direct the selection, training, evaluation and development of aviation adjunct faculty/instructors; review of credentials, screening of applications, and formulation of standardized flight training for adjuncts. Direct and coordinate activities of instructors, and others. Plan and implement professional development activities for instructors in the academic program.
Maintain current knowledge of, and interpret and apply Federal, State, and related legislation and FAA regulations. Revises program administration to comply with regulations.
Responsible for budget preparation in conjunction with the CTE Associate Dean, monitoring, verification and reconciliation of expenditure of funds for the academic program. Performs inventory reconciliation and plans for future equipment and facilities requests.
Establish working relationships with internal and external stakeholders, and attend meetings which represent the college.
Minimum Expectations & Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Education, Aviation, or combination of Associates in Aviation plus closely related Bachelor's
- Degree in field and three-five years of experience in Career and Technical Education (CTE) or higher education.
- Experience teaching or training (knowledgeable regarding training techniques and adult learning)
- Ability to communicate effectively and tactfully with a wide variety of personnel including external partners.
- Ability to use database, spreadsheet and word processing software.
- Maintenance of flight instructor status
