POSITION SUMMARY (Basic purpose or primary function of job)

The Director, Content Strategy & Planning collaborates across the organization to drive strategy and planning for the Arthritis Foundation's content program across a variety of content channels, formats, and objectives. They will develop an understanding of diverse constituencies, mine input and insights from a variety of sources, partner with internal and external stakeholders, and bring an understanding of content best practices to lead the development of an overall strategy to deliver compelling content that meets a range of stakeholder objectives. They will distill that strategy into a plan and strategic editorial calendar and lead efforts to ensure that the Foundation is delivering the right content to the right audiences in the right formats.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES (Principal responsibilities or job duties)

  • Drive strategy and planning, in partnership with departmental stakeholders, Strategic Marketing Managers, and other subject matter experts (SMEs), across a variety of content objectives such as health promotion, advocacy, science, fundraising, brand, etc. and content types (digital, print, video, podcasts, etc.).
  • Partner with internal and external SMEs and develop an understanding of various constituencies to determine content needs and opportunities.
  • Serve as the strategic champion for the content planning process and drive the development of a holistic annual plan to deliver compelling content that meets various objectives.
  • Determine which existing content assets should be retired, merged, or otherwise streamlined, as well as identify new content needs and sources based on various input and insights.
  • Oversee the Foundation's content calendar (both the inventory and scheduling of content assets) across multiple channels.
  • Leverage data and insights to build a plan for content that is findable and usable. Bring an understanding of SEO to the content strategy and plan.
  • Provide strategic guidance to colleagues on content development, distribution, measurement, and optimization for a variety of content assets, such as podcasts, e-books, videos and infographics.
  • Develop strategies to maximize content impact through content reuse and transformation.
  • Supervise and provide day-to-day leadership and mentoring to the Manager, Content Planning.


  • REQUIRED EXPERIENCE & EDUCATION

  • Bachelor's degree in Marketing, Communications or related discipline required. Seven to ten years of experience in a marketing or communications role requiring action and decision-making skills.
  • Strong track record of collaborating with internal stakeholders, as well as experience working with external subject matter experts and other volunteers.
  • Must demonstrate experience in developing content strategies and plans.
  • Background in nonprofit environment a plus as well as experience leading content planning to meet a variety of goals. Ability to work independently and manage projects from inception to completion with accountability for goal setting and results.
  • Strong strategy development, planning, and interpersonal skills.
  • The ability to consider how available resources such as staff and content program budget and expenses should guide content planning.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
  • Experience working in a fast-paced environment, effectively overseeing and leading multiple initiatives and priorities, and ability to set and meet deadlines.
  • A demonstrated commitment to high professional ethical standards and a diverse workplace.
