REPORTS TO: Harper Woods School District, Chief Academic Officer
SUPERVISES: No direct supervision of Harper Woods School District employees.
SUMMARY OF POSITION: The Director provides oversight to the educational programming for at risk high school students. The Director selects educational software programs designed to help and support students who have a credit deficiency toward graduation. The Director works closely with educators, parents, administrators and mental heath professionals to ensure each Harper Academy student achieves success in working toward and attaining a high school diploma.
NATURE AND SCOPE OF JOB: The Director provides leadership and managerial oversight to the instructional program and school operations to ensure a school climate that fosters the educational development of each pupil at the Alternative High School.
QUALIFICATIONS: The Director of the Alternative High School shall:
1. Hold a valid Michigan administrative certificate.
2. Have successful teaching experience at the high school level with minimum of three years teaching experience.
3. Have demonstrated leadership skills in the areas of curriculum development and program evaluation; staff development and school improvement.
4. Have strong interpersonal and communication skills.
5. Hold a permanent teacher's certification.
6. Have a strong background in using student achievement data to inform instruction.
7. Have experience working in remote learning situations.
8. Have excellent administrative and/or teaching experience, preferably with students who need remedial and supplementary services.
9. Demonstrate excellent organizational skills and the ability to motivate people.
10. Have excellent integrity and demonstrate good moral character and initiative.
11. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of curriculum development and program evaluation, child growth and development, effective instructional strategies, classroom management, learning assessment and diagnosis, and research related to learning.
12. Demonstrate an understanding of the regulations regarding the operations of a high school.
13. Exhibit a personality that demonstrates enthusiasm and interpersonal skills to relate well with students, staff, administration, parents, and the community.
14. Able to coordinate and manage multiple programs for students.
15. Demonstrate the ability to use and manage technology programs to facilitate student learning platforms, data management, information retrieval, visual and audio presentations, and telecommunications.
16. Work with administrators, counselors, social workers and teachers to coordinate individual education plans for at risk students.
17. Provide alternative force choice and creative assessment for students.
18. Offer input and assist grade level, subject matter and leader led conferences with students.
19. Maintain inventory of instructional materials, aids and equipment.
20. Maintain accurate complete student records and prepare quarterly progress reports.
21. Monitor individual student's progress as well as needs assessment. Support online learning platform.
22. Conduct office hours and plan study programs to meet students needs, interests and abilities.
23. Design/support curriculum as per the needs of the students and district mandates.
24. Handle attendance, progress reports, grades, transcripts and evaluations.
25. Discuss with parents on student progress and academic achievements.
26. Maintain parent/students logs, counsel students during academic and adjustment problems.
27. Other duties as assigned.
