DESCRIPTION:
Reporting to the Vice President, Human Resources, the Director, Human Resources will provide strategic leadership and direction to the Human Resources function. This position is responsible for designing, implementing, and managing key HR practices that enhance organizational effectiveness and foster a culture of engagement, inclusion, and well-being.
The Director is a member of FortisAlberta's Senior Management Team and will collaborate with leaders across the organization to align people strategies with corporate objectives, shape the company's strategic direction, and contribute to the achievement of organizational goals and priorities.

DESCRIPTION:
Reporting to the Vice President, Human Resources, the Director, Human Resources will provide strategic leadership and direction to the Human Resources function. This position is responsible for designing, implementing, and managing key HR practices that enhance organizational effectiveness and foster a culture of engagement, inclusion, and well-being.
The Director is a member of FortisAlberta's Senior Management Team and will collaborate with leaders across the organization to align people strategies with corporate objectives, shape the company's strategic direction, and contribute to the achievement of organizational goals and priorities.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE (but not limited to):
- Develop and execute HR strategies that support long-term business success and reflect the organization's mission, vision, and values.
- Advise senior leadership on organizational design, workforce planning, employee engagement, and change management.
- Champion a positive, inclusive workplace culture that supports employee well-being and aligns with organizational values.
- Manage employee relations, including performance management and workplace investigations, while ensuring compliance with legislation and internal policies.
- Support health, wellness, and safety programs, including disability management and related initiatives.
- Lead labour relations functions including negotiations, grievance resolution, arbitrations, and conflict management.
- Maintain collaborative working relationships with the United Utility Workers Association (UUWA).
- Oversee the interpretation and application of the collective agreement and provide guidance on job evaluation, classification, and compensation in collaboration with the union.
- Design and manage compensation, benefits, and pension programs that are competitive and aligned with industry benchmarks.
- Leverage data and market insights to ensure compensation strategies are compliant, competitive, and equitable.
- Drive continuous improvement in HR processes and oversee the implementation and optimization of HR technology solutions, including HRIS and analytics tools.
- Manage departmental budgets and ensure alignment with overall financial objectives of the organization.
- Support special projects assigned by senior leadership to advance business and people priorities.
- Build strong internal and external relationships and collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders to drive alignment and results.
- Represent the organization at conferences, industry associations, and external events to promote the employer brand.
- Communicate HR strategies and initiatives effectively across the organization to ensure understanding and engagement.
- Develop and implement succession planning frameworks to identify and prepare future leaders.
- Lead diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives and support a workplace that embraces belonging and fairness.
- Ensure the organization is equipped with the talent, resources, and workforce planning strategies required to meet current and future needs.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
- Bring practical experience in unionized environments and strong knowledge of labour relations.
- Demonstrate deep understanding of HR functions, employment law, equity regulations, and health and safety requirements.
- Exhibit strong leadership in managing change and guiding organizational transformation.
- Show proven ability in financial planning related to HR operations, including budgeting and forecasting.
- Communicate effectively in both written and verbal formats, engaging with stakeholders at all levels.
- Coach and mentor teams while fostering collaboration, alignment, and a high-performing culture.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with both internal and external stakeholders through a client-focused approach.
- Demonstrate professionalism, discretion, and the ability to manage confidential information responsibly.
- Use critical thinking and analysis to develop sound, actionable recommendations.
- Persuade and influence stakeholders in a thoughtful and strategic manner.
- Manage competing priorities with excellent organizational and time management skills in high-pressure environments.
- Adapt and respond effectively in a fast-paced and continuously evolving workplace.
- Commit to building an inclusive workplace that reflects the organization's goals and values.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
- Hold a post-secondary degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field.
- Bring at least 10 years of senior-level HR experience, with a minimum of five years leading teams and complex HR initiatives.
- Possess an equivalent combination of education and experience where applicable.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS:
- This position requires occasional overnight travel.
- A valid Class 5 driver's license is required.
