Director Labor Relations-Labor Relations-Mount Sinai Hospital-Full Time-Days

Position Summary:

Responsible for day-to-day administration of labor relations policies and collective bargaining agreements. Directs subordinates and ensures adherence to established policies and practices. Serves as chief negotiator for selected collective bargaining agreements. Develops and implements appropriate corrective actions necessary to limit sources of employee conflicts and grievances and improve employee relations climate. Assists in the development of Medical Center-wide policies and procedures necessary to ensure compliance with collective bargaining agreements and relevant labor legislation.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for labor relations at the Affiliates and Mount Sinai Queens.
  • Responsible for day-to-day administration of labor relations policies and collective bargaining agreements; interprets agreements and policies and provides advice and guidance to managers on applications of same.
  • Oversees, directs and monitors work of subordinates and ensures adherence to established policies and practices. Interviews, hires, trains, develops, evaluates, disciplines and discharges assigned subordinates.
  • Serves as principal spokesperson and chief negotiator during negotiations for selected collective bargaining agreement renewals. Assists in developing strategies and coordinating preparations for negotiations for selected collective bargaining agreement renewals. Assists in developing strategies and coordinating preparations for negotiation of other collective bargaining agreements.
  • Directs employee relations activities and directly or through subordinates investigates sources of bargaining and non-bargaining unit grievances; develops and recommends appropriate corrective actions, and advises managers on communications approaches, progressive discipline, documentation, dispute resolution and so forth.
  • Develops and conducts training programs related to labor and employee relations and policies and procedures, and grievance handling, for Medical Center supervisors and managers.
  • Oversees and coordinates preparations for employee conflict hearings and investigations involving American Arbitration Association, Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, Division of Human Rights, National Labor Relations Board, and Unemployment Insurance Division.
  • Recommends and assists in the implementation of Medical Center-wide policies and procedures necessary to establish and maintain compliance with collective bargaining agreements and relevant Labor legislation.
  • Confers regularly with bargaining unit representatives to review labor-management relations, employee relations climate, specific problem situations and actions necessary to improve relations.
  • Develops, secures approval of, and implements plans, budgets, policies and procedures necessary to achieve agreed upon goals and objectives.
  • Develops and implements appropriate documentation and reporting mechanisms necessary to measure institutional performance in adherence to established goals and objectives for administration of labor and employee relations.
  • Serves on various Medical Center committees concerned with development of new program and study and resolution of management problems.


Qualifications

Education Requirements:
  • Master's Degree in Labor & Industrial Relations or equivalent experience.

Experience Requirements:

  • Three to five years of progressive experience within a large, multiple-bargaining unit organization, preferably within a health care organization.

  • Experience in direct administration and negotiation of collective bargaining agreements, oversight of unemployment insurance program administration and representation at judicial proceeds.

Compensation Statement

The Mount Sinai Health System (MSHS) provides salary ranges that comply with the New York City Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $127,044.00 - $190,565.00 Annually. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, education, and operational need. The salary range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses/incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits.
