Thanks to a transformational gift from Stu Lang, Class of 1970, and Kim Lang Upper Canada College is establishing the Lang Leadership Lab to enhance student leadership development programming at the College. With new program funds and a future home in the campus master plan, the Lang Leadership Lab will advance a school-wide approach to student leadership development, supporting our aim of helping students on their journey to become globally-minded, ethical, service-oriented and inclusive leaders who seek to advance peace, democracy, equity and environmental sustainability. Building on the success of the Lang Scholars and Lang National Scholarship and the existing opportunities our students have in curricular and co-curricular activities to develop their leadership skills, the Lang Leadership Lab will support student leadership development for all students at the College SK-Year 12 through support for enhanced opportunities and programming at the Deer Park and Norval campuses.

Key Responsibilities and Tasks

Strategic Leadership:
  • Collaborate with the Vice-Principal, Learning and Academic Innovation and other members of the Senior Leadership Team to develop a long-term vision and strategic plan for the Lang Leadership Lab.
  • Set annual goals and ensure strategic and operational goals and student leadership programming are aligned with the overall strategic and operational goals of the College, including the established concept and approach to student leadership development.
  • Continuously evaluate the success of student leadership programming, developing appropriate indicators and mechanisms to measure and track success and responding appropriately to make improvements where necessary. Conduct student needs assessments and program evaluation to identify opportunities for change, and develop new/revised program elements to address.
  • Stay informed and current with research in education and collaborate in the ongoing development of exceptional teaching practices across the school (SK-12).
  • Represent the Lang Leadership Lab within the College community and with external stakeholders.
  • Develop collaborative relationships with key roles including members of the Senior Leadership Team, the Director of Academics, Director of the Wernham West Centre for Learning and Student Services, Director of Norval, Director of Wellbeing and Pluralism and Assistant Heads to support the College's student leadership objectives.

Curriculum Development and Student Programming:
  • Collaborate with the Learning and Academic Innovation Team and Prep and Upper School leadership teams, work with faculty in their teaching, advising and co-curricular responsibilities, and engage outside subject-matter expertise as appropriate to lead the development of student leadership programming, including the development of a scope and sequence of knowledge, skills, opportunities and relevant pedagogies.
  • Collaborate with colleagues who lead the academic, co-curricular and advising programs to integrate a multi-faceted age-appropriate approach to student leadership development across the continuum SK-Year 12 that supports a set of different pathways to leadership for students and the development of student leadership portfolios and credentialling.
  • Design and deliver engaging leadership programs, workshops, and retreats for students at all levels, building on current strengths and successes and looking for new opportunities aligned with our existing vision and approach.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to develop and/or enhance existing mentorship programming that connects students in different year levels and consider programming that facilitates learning from accomplished leaders from various fields.
  • Collaborate with the colleagues leading these areas to further develop the House system, our advising program and co-curricular athletic, arts and service programming to support student leadership development.
  • Create opportunities for students to apply their leadership skills through service-learning projects, community initiatives, and global engagement.

Partnerships and Community Programming:
  • Building on existing summer camp programming, develop and implement a multi-year-level co-ed leadership summer camp that attracts students in Toronto, nationally and internationally.
  • Forge strategic partnerships with external organizations, institutions, and thought leaders in the field of student leadership development.

Faculty and Staff Development:
  • Provide professional development opportunities for faculty and staff to enhance their capacity to deliver student leadership programming and opportunities aligned with the College's vision and approach.

College-Wide Coordination and Leadership
  • Communicate with parents, students, faculty and other key community constituents at events such as Program Information Evenings, Course Selection Evenings and Open Houses.
  • Participate as a member of relevant school-based committees.
  • Act as a resource/support to individual employees and business units (e.g. Advancement, Communication, People and Culture) on an as-needed basis in relation to student leadership priorities.
  • Foster connections with other schools that are part of our professional network, including CIS, CAIS, IB and IBSC, through means such as network calls and meetings to share and collaborate on leadership development best practices.
  • Work in collaboration with the school-based leadership teams to identify appropriate opportunities for parent education and facilitate or co-facilitate the training and learning of parent groups, including the Parents' Organization, related to leadership development.

Other duties
  • Fulfill teaching and/or co-curricular responsibilities that are equivalent to 1 section.
  • Supervise an IB student project (Personal Project or Extended Essay) annually.
  • Other duties as required at the request of the VP, Learning and Academic Innovation
